Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Well, the fact is just about any drug one desires is available on campus, but they’re not a highly visible part of campus life. Tons of people drink, and many smoke pot, but there are also select pockets of the student body who use other drugs, as well. Ecstasy is big sometimes, as are ‘shrooms and acid. Cocaine is available, but only the richest use it with anything approaching regularity. Lots of students use pills as study aids, at least that’s what they claim the pills are for, but harder stuff like meth or heroin is almost non-existent on campus. The conventional wisdom is that if you want to find a drug or a group of people who use a certain drug, you’ll probably be successful, but if you don’t, except for beer (and sometimes pot), you really won’t have much experience with other drugs. Users tend to be somewhat responsible, and very circumspect, which is largely because the College is incredibly tolerant about pot and alcohol and hard on anything else.

Drugs aren’t a necessity for a social life at Pomona; as often as not, they’re an escape from a sometimes overwhelmingly-present social scene. Alcohol and pot are definitely mainstays of the social scene, but not the entire social scene. They can certainly be avoided if you want (especially if you live in substance-free hall), but other drug use is generally geared toward escapism. The very fact that some students can attend Pomona for four years and be active and social and still have no idea of the extent to which drug use pervades the campus is proof positive that it’s not generally that big of a deal. However, the grade would be higher save the prevalence of alcohol on campus.

Drinking and Weed

Many students at Pomona college drink, though it is possible to have a good social life without partaking. The college is pretty strict on the underclassman side of smoking, where hard alcohol is banned, as are drinking games. However, on the junior/senior side, there are virtually no limitations. Weed is accessible and done by certain people. Cigarettes are less prevalent.

Drug Scene

I have never seen or heard of anyone doing drugs... I do live in a substance-free sponsor group, though. However, my sponsor group may be the only substance-free sponsor group that is actually substance-free. I have not ever been pressured to do drugs or drink alcohol, and I don't see alcohol-drinking anywhere (It does of course happen, though; you hear about it).

Our campus is supposed to be 100% smoke-free, but I see three people around who regularly smoke. Pretty annoying if you have asthma... I guess this isn't quite as enforced as it should be. However, our alcohol policy is strictly enforced.

6:01 Drinking Is a Big Deal

6:01 its a claremont college tradition in fall semester. During the two first weeks of school no one is allowed to have any kind of alcoholic beverages on campus (substance free period), so that freshmen can socialize without alcohol. It is a pretty serious deal. On a saturday at 6:01pm every one is allowed to drink finally and the school gets into a chaos...

At other times alcohol and Marijuana are pretty accessible at the other colleges, particularly CMC(neighboring claremont colleges), though they are still quite present at pomona among juniors and seniors. There is a small circle of people who do other drugs like cocaine, but it is not visible.
