Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Pomona security officers are generally laid-back, eager to help, and loathe to make your, and thus their, lives more difficult. They are far more likely to warn you than cite you for most minor infractions. Most of them want to be your friend, and it’s hard to be friends with someone who’s all up in your bidness! One particularly gregarious guard even used to lead rap freestyles at parties.

Pomona is a safe campus; there are hardly ever any incidents (except for bike theft—no one knows who steals all the bikes, but whoever it is must have a garage the size of an airplane hangar to hold all the spare parts they’ve accumulated), and when there are incidents, the security officers usually respond promptly and professionally. Sometimes, the administration does get a little too concerned with currying student favor to perform their duties to the fullest. Student escorts are available for those who don’t wish to travel the campus alone at night, and cab rides home from the surrounding area for drunk students are free with a college ID.

Bike Thefts Common

I have never felt unsafe on Pomona's campus. It is a small campus bordered by an affluent community. However, bike thefts are very common, so invest in a U-lock. Also, students have had laptops stolen, though I have never worried about any of the students taking my things.

Health & Safety

We had a small incident earlier this year at the Claremont Colleges in which a drunk male junior from Pitzer College entered the unlocked dorms of two Scripps College students and stood above them on their beds half-naked as they slept. However, the culprit was caught and was handed over to the law. If you lock your doors (duh!!) then there shouldn't be any problems.

I, as a female freshman, feel very safe on campus, even walking alone at decent hours of the night. Upon arrival, we were given whistles to attach to our lanyards to use in case of an emergency. There is a $100 fine if it is needlessly blown, so Campus Security takes it very seriously if they hear one. This wonderful group of men and women patrol the campuses at night in golf carts and are just a phone call away (from your personal cell phone or one of the emergency blue light phones we have around campus) from picking you up all the way on the north end of Claremont McKenna and driving you back to your dorm on the south end of Pomona at any time of the night in case you don't feel safe walking that far alone or if it's just too cold. The campus security member who picked me up was very friendly and not awkward at all.
