Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students complain about the prices of most of the off-campus restaurants, but there are plenty of cheap options as well. As is always the case, you’re not going to find fancy food for low prices, but in the Village you will find good food for good prices, as well as finer food for higher prices. If you are in the market for fast food, you will likely need a car, as the Village is a little too hoity-toity to have a McDonald’s on the corner. The Village’s deficiencies as per dining have a lot more to do with the general deficiencies of the Village as a college town than they do with the actual restaurants.

Considering the size of the Village, it is remarkably well stocked with restaurants, the one real concession to college life. However, due to the property taxes in the Village, most of the restaurants are somewhat pricey. There are exceptions though, including Delhi Palace Express, Sacas, and The Taco Factory. However, you may soon tire of these places and long for new palate-tickling dining options. When this happens, you will need a car or a friend with a car. Of course, you are more likely to be friends with someone with a car than they are likely to be friends with you. A friend in need is a friend indeed, and what, pray tell, do the automotively-privileged need that the rest of us can ever hope to provide?

Ain't the Greatest Grub

Off-campus dining is one of the biggest downfalls to campus life in Claremont. Despite the mass presence of students (the Claremont Colleges, duh), it appears no one in the food industry is interested in such a big, easy market. There is no real fast food (a law bans it in the city's limits). The closing of the nearby CVS means getting milk requires a 2.5 trip to Vons, uphill. The Village is populated almost entirely by mid-to-high end restaurants. This isn't the kind of college town where you can get cheap Chinese, pizza slices (not a single pizza joint- only Pizza N such, a sit down eatery), or other wonderfully greasy quick fixes.

Facts

Did You Know?

If, as is often the case in college, you are feeling a bit run down, a bit out of shape, and if, as may also often be the case, you believe that your exclusive diet of beer and nacho-cheese dip just isn’t cutting it, then hit the Village for the Sunday farmer’s market, which features organic produce and other healthy things to eat. Unfortunately, you have to wake up awfully early to get there.
