College Prowler Take

Few Princeton students will find themselves under the scrutiny of Princeton’s campus police or University administration. Those students who do can be called in for any number of reasons, from climbing tent scaffolding at reunions to breaking into a dining hall after hours to get a scoop of ice cream. Room parties tend to be broken up not because of presumed underage drinking but because of noise complaints. Just as long as those students who chose to drink do so without breaking noise and open container regulations, Public Safety does not give them too much of a problem.

Campus police rely mostly on town police for taking care of major issues. The campus police focus more on problems such as noise complaints, which may result from parties where alcohol is served. The majority of calls to Public Safety are about thefts and alcohol-related issues, such as drunk students needing transport to McCosh Health Center.

As long as you don't make too much noise while you're throwing a party or you don't have an open container outside of your room, you're good to go.

It's very, very lax and sort of ridiculous. Surely, the University knows kids get wasted, but very little is done about it. Princeton in general puts a lot of trust in the students. As long as you're not stupid about it, you can have a party and not get caught.

Basically, don't be stupid. If you want to pregame in your room, nobody's going to care. Just don't blast the music ridiculously loud—that's a signal for Public Safety to investigate. As long as you're smart, nobody cares.

They’re rather relaxed as long as the students are not too loud or obviously breaking rules.

They won’t tolerate drugs if they find out. With drinking, they tend to look the other way unless someone is hospitalized or something. They bust room parties sometimes, but no one is ever arrested. Drinking is a different thing, but campus police will look the other way. They’re not strict at all; there are parties outside all the time.
