Parking Permits

Freshmen are not allowed to bring cars to school. Most undergrads who apply for parking permits get them. There are two student parking lots: one far from the main part of campus near Jadwin Gym and the other one slightly closer between the main part of campus and Lake Carnegie. To apply, students should go to the Parking Office in New South before the end of the academic year to obtain a pass for the upcoming year. The earlier a student applies, the most likely he or she is to get a space in the closer lot.

College Prowler Take

One major strength in Princeton’s parking program is that it is possible to walk nearly everywhere on campus, so parking is a non-issue. There are plenty of restaurants, shops, and small groceries within walking distance of the dorms. For independent students who need a wider selection of food, the Undergraduate Student Government has organized a free grocery delivery service. When students need to go off-campus, there are plenty of shuttle buses between the dorms and parking lots throughout the day.

It is possible to walk everywhere in the town of Princeton. For those who are not so energetic to walk to distant parking lots to pick up their cars, a campus shuttle runs throughout campus. While the shuttle bus runs regularly through most of the day, the parking lots are far from campus security booths. The lots all have lights and campus security blue phones, but they can be intimidating during certain times of day. That said, crime in the parking lots is rare, but it would be a good idea to carry a cell phone at the very least.

Parking on campus is awful. Freshmen and sophomores can't bring cars, which is a pain. There is not much parking in town, and you can only drive through the campus for a half hour at a time. There is a parking lot for upperclassmen, but it is a decent walk away from the main part of campus. However, pretty much everything you need is on campus.

Parking sucks because there aren’t a lot of places you can park without incurring a $20 fine. There are a few big lots where everyone parks, but these are generally pretty far from the living areas.

Parking is not really a problem, but the lot is relatively far from your dorm, so it’s always kind of a big deal to go get your car for something. There’s only temporary parking near the dorms. A lot of students don’t have cars, because you don’t really need to go off campus if you don’t want to.

The parking lot is about a 10–15 minute walk from the dorms. Parking on the street is kind of difficult, though, because the town is always crowded, and there’s only parallel metered parking on the streets. I have my car, and it’s definitely worth it.

Mainly everything is within walking distance in Princeton, so you really don’t need to drive anywhere. There is parking—and a lot of it—mainly around the pool and gym. There is room; you just might have to walk a little to get to your class, because the classes are kind of far away from the parking.
