College Prowler Take
Princeton has 24-hour campus security. Whether they’re breaking up a noisy room party or assisting in medical emergencies, safety officers always pose a strong presence. Because of Princeton’s size, most students feel safe enough to walk across campus alone in the middle of the night to the 24-hour WaWa convenience store for a cup of coffee or wrap sandwich after everything else is closed. The most common crime seems to be theft of unattended items, namely laptop computers, bicycles, and jackets. Recently, however, there has been more attention placed on campus sexual violence in the form of date rape thanks to an intensive Take Back the Night program initiated by the Organization for Women Leaders (OWL), a women’s issues group founded by several members of Princeton’s Class of 2003.
As a town, Princeton is extremely safe. The fact that students feel comfortable walking home from the library rather than constantly worry about how to get from place to place means that students really have time to concentrate on their studies. Some may even lament that the constant presence of Public Safety officers makes it difficult to have too much fun on campus, but the University has made personal safety a top priority, particularly through the installation of a personal I.D. system for getting into dormitories and other major University Buildings.

I have never felt unsafe on the Princeton campus. I have walked alone numerous times at 4 a.m., and I have seen Public Safety patrolling the campus. I have never had anything stolen. If you make friends with the officers, you will be in great shape.

The one piece of advice I would offer about campus safety is to buy a lock for your laptop and bike. Also, don’t take anything you like too much out to the Street with you. I lock my laptop and bike and have been lucky with both, but I have had four or five jackets taken out at the eating clubs. There’s not much you can do about lost jackets except post notices in coat rooms. Don’t expect to see lost possessions again. |

If anything, Public Safety has too much of a presence on campus. As long as you use common sense and stay out of certain parts of town by yourself after dark, there is nothing to worry about. |

Security and safety are very good. There’s no rampant crime of any kind, with the possible exception of bicycle theft. As long as you always lock your bike, you should be safe from that. I feel safe walking across campus at 5 a.m. Princeton is a very safe campus; it is arguably the safest you will encounter in the nation. Students can go around campus at any hour without fearing some sort of criminal encounter. I have gone running at 4 a.m., and I am a girl. |
