Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The lights go out, and a spotlight illuminates the door. The crowd is hyped, screaming and counting down the seconds until midnight. Three, two, one, and with a deafening roar, the basketball season has officially begun. For all PC students, Late-Night Madness is one event you must attend. Being a Division I school in the Big East, men’s basketball is by far the biggest sport at PC. Friar fanatics pack the Dunk or McPhails to watch the games, and with the coach named the 2008 Associated Press Basketball Coach of the Year, Friar fans have never been more revved up. School spirit extends to hockey and lacrosse, as well, and, generally, all the sports have a decent turnout. Since most students won’t compete on a Division I team, intramurals are huge, yet anyone of any degree of athleticism can play and have tons of fun.

Great school spirit and enthusiasm is a must for any PC student. All sporting events, excluding men’s basketball, are free. Also free are the highly coveted IM championship shirts. With a large selection of IM and club sports—a list that is always growing according to the demands of students—there is no reason why the athletically inclined cannot continue their practice. If it’s not already offered at PC, you can start it!

PC Sports

Being a division 1 school, sports is taken very seriously with our school, although we might not be the best ranked. However, all the teams work very hard and it is very fun to attend the games! The club and intramural sports at PC are pretty fun as well. I am a intramural soccer referee and it is also so fun to go to the games and participate and help out with the sports.

Very Active Campus

Providence College is a D1 school and part of the Big East conference, so athletics are pretty big. The main sport is basketball, with most of the student body purchasing season tickets. The best part about the athletics here, is that because the school is so small, there is a high likelihood of having athletes in your day to day classes, which is usually not the case at the big schools we compete with.

The gym is brand new with state of the art equipment and a variety of classes. Intramural sports are HUGE here as well

Most Popular Sports

Men’s basketball and hockey are the most important sports at PC, drawing local fans as well as alumni. All of the IM sports are popular, especially volleyball, softball, basketball, and wiffleball.

Most Overlooked Teams

The women’s rugby team is phenomenal. Their trips to nationals have definitely expanded their fan base, though.

School Spirit

Providence students are full of pep and vigor, particularly when it comes to their school. There are black-out games where fans wore all black, and when it comes to men’s basketball, anything goes. The new logo is definitely an improvement, and everyone owns a closet full of PC apparel. PCers are definitely united around our sports teams, although they show this school spirit when discussing the school itself. Although some are not as enthusiastic as others, the majority of students love PC and share that love with anyone and everyone.

Getting Tickets

Tickets for the men’s basketball game are available through the Ticket Office in Peterson. They are also sold in Ray and Slavin during meal times. All other sports are free, so just throw on some Friar gear and head over.
