Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Policies are in place to punish miscreants, from parking to drug use, but enforcement varies. Campus security will hand out parking tickets without hesitation, but they will very rarely conduct searches for suspected drug use. Usually, a warning is given before any penalties are assigned for offenses. If you are written up for an infraction, the fines are steep. A first time alcohol infraction costs a couple hundred dollars and a meeting with your Hall Director. A transport to the hospital for an alcohol related occurrence can be $1,000. The best way to avoid fines and writeups is to not break the rules, but if you are breaking the rules, avoid being blatant. Most agree that drinking is generally overlooked unless it is disturbing others. However, with various new alcohol policies, including the banning of hard alcohol on campus and a policy which states that any student over 21 may have no more than six beers in their possession at one time, students are on alert more than ever.

One rule the Providence students detest is parietals. Members of the opposite sex are not allowed in rooms after 12 a.m. during the week and 2 a.m. on the weekends. Although this rule is hardest to enforce in coed dorms, it is strictly enforced in all-female dorms, where the guest log makes it fairly simple to track down vagrant boys. Enforcement of college rules really comes down to the Resident Assistants, although Hall Directors and campus security will occasionally fill out reports, as well. Laid-back RAs are just as common as strict ones, so it’s really the luck of the draw. It is better to just be smart about rule-breaking.

Parietals

Providence College is extremely strict in several areas. To begin, they have absolutely no toleration for hard alcohol for anyone of any age. They is no partying on campus because they security guards and R.A's follow these rules so closely, which makes the student population go out off campus on friday and saturday nights. Besides this, at least for the dorm style buildings, they are a parietals rule, in that no one of the opposite gender may be in the dorms past midnight on weeknights and two a.m. on weekends. This makes it relatively difficult to hang out with mixed friend groups in girl/guy dorms. For all the girl freshman dorms, they have a security guard sitting at the dorm, just reinforcing this very strict policy.

Everything Is About Friendship

If you know the right people, you can get away with anything. If you and an RA are cool, they will typically allow you to do things that other RAs don't allow. Bottomline: Become friends with everyone on campus and you rule the campus. Also getting into Friar's Club (the only fraternity on campus) will give some of the same perks.

Uncalled for

All of the rules to keep hard alcohol off campus just results in house parties in upperclassman houses. The rules such as parietals are ridiculous which means you must sign members of the opposite sex into your dorm and they can only stay until midnight on weekdays and 2 am on weekends.
