Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines, or Lilly? This fairly simple question examines the extent of diversity at PC. The majority of the student body is Caucasian and Christian. The lack of diversity at PC is noted by everyone, and while some think it creates a comfortable surrounding, many long for a more diverse campus.

Providence College administration, spurred by concern vocalized by the student body, has made increased racial, ethnic, geographic and socio-economic diversity on campus a main goal. Being a tuition-driven school, PC cannot provide all of the scholarships necessary to bring immediate diversification, but it continues to work towards this end, as the College believes that global awareness and acceptance is one of the key elements that a well-rounded student must embody. Even with these efforts, diversity remains poor at Providence College. The Balfour Center for Multicultural Affairs helps increase diversity awareness on campus by sponsoring activities and promoting all cultures, and there are numerous ethnic clubs on campus such as African American Club, Asian Club, Gaelic Society, and Amigos Unidos.

Diversity...HA!!! There Is No Diversity

In my graduating year of 2007, I swore it was about 5-7 people of color that graduated...including myself!! Such a shame, I don't understand how a school can be in a completely urban neighborhood, and still have an enormous lack of diversity!!! They have a word for this in the black studies department...it's called " Culture Shock!!!" which is when a person of color comes to this school, they are shocked at the amount of people "unlike" themselves. Such a shame...I hope Providence has gotten better with their diversity recruitment since I graduated!!

Diversity

There are several clubs and organizations that represent and celebrate individuals' ethnicities. Several times a month various clubs offer other students the opportunity to take part in the celebration by offering food, music, or guest speakers.

Everyone Looks the Same

Even though Providence College is has an overwhelmingly white population, somehow all of the white students just look the same. Comparable to a J. Crew ad.
