Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Every year seems to be a year of renewal for Providence College. Students eagerly anticipate new structures and edifices upon return each September. Everyone has grown accustomed to the new restaurant-style look of Raymond Dining Hall, and in 2005, the interior of the Smith Center for the Fine Arts was erected, and students arrived to find a masterpiece that hopefully will originate many other masterpieces within its walls. The campus also boasts suite-style living, something that everyone tries to inhabit each year. PC students will also make sure to tell anyone in the first five minutes of chatting that their school has a state-of-the-art gym, the Concannon Fitness Center. Here, two stories of exerciser’s paradise are constantly in use by students and faculty alike. Alongside the fitness center is a turf field, which hides PC’s parking garage. The field is always busy with lacrosse practices, field hockey games, and evening intramural matches.

The Phillips Memorial Library has also been completely renovated and sports two Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired floors filled with couches, tables, and the second largest electronic database access in the state. Having received two national architectural awards for its design, PC’s library is the center for intellectual activity on campus, and a place of study that students actually don’t mind being at. The Slavin Center will be an eco-friendly building powered by solar panels and will house a late-night coffee and snack bar, various 24/7 informal gathering spaces, and 7,700 square feet of space in which students will be able to watch movies, check their e-mail, and sit and chat with their friends, among other things. Providence administration deserves a round of applause for addressing the needs of the student body by building and refurbishing the campus in a rather short period of time. The campus will now be filled with the hustle and bustle of merry students who are comfortable in their surroundings and find their needs met at every corner.

Facilities Are Great

Although I wouldn't say that any of the buildings on campus are rundown, some of them have that "old building" feel to them. Most of the buildings look the same, brown bricked and plain. The best looking building is Harkins Hall, which also contains our admissions office.

The gym, Concannon Fitness Center was just redone and is absolutely amazing. Most of the equipment has tv's attached so it's nice to have the distraction while working out.

The library is old, plain, and somewhat creepy. However, it always seems to have what I need for research and there are plenty of places to sit and work.

Slavin, the student center was just renovated and it is great! There is now a coffee shop PC Perk and more couches and tables for students to sit in and work or relax. It is open 24 hours a day which is another bonus.

While most of the campus isn't aesthetically pleasing, PC's facilities are practical and have hidden perks to them

Favorite Things To Do

The artistically inclined can check out the latest student masterpieces at the Hunt-Cavanaugh Gallery, as well as the Smith Center for the Fine Arts. Blackfriars Theater hosts the school’s dramatic productions twice a year. The Board of Programmers and the SAIL office offer numerous entertainment events, including concerts twice a year (by bands like Third Eye Blind), karaoke in McPhails, and even a hypnotist in ‘64 Hall. Looking for a switch from Raymond Hall food? Many students enjoy frequenting the international food festivals that BMSA (Board of Multicultural Student Affairs) puts on. But many students’ thing to do is to catch a show by Rejects on the Rise, PC’s very own improv group—if you want to laugh really hard, be sure to check them out.

Find yourself with time to spare between classes? No problem. Try hitting up the state-of-the-art gym, tossing a Frisbee on the quad, or popping in at the Fine Arts Center to see student work. Are you hungry for something? Get an iced coffee from Jazzman’s Café or grab some popcorn and a milkshake in McPhails and watch the game. Need a little competition to take your mind off of the world of academia for a while? Verse your friends in McPhails at the pool table, pingpong table, or foosball table. Need to raise the competition level? Head over to the Recreational Sports office and sign up for an intramural sports team. And of course, if you’re feeling really tenacious, take a lunchtime spinning class, and hope you will be able to walk to your next class.
