Social Scene

Mostly all social events that involve drinking are off campus, which is nice because you get to get away from the school for a bit, and on campus there is also activities and random things going on. So its unique because you get to experience what it is like to live in a campus style school, as well as what it is like to be in a city style school.

Civ

Civ really sets PC apart from other schools. Personally I love Civ but it all varies depending on who you ask. It's divided into 4 different teachers teaching 4 parts; Literature, History, Theology and Philosophy. It's every day and one day a week you have "Seminar" where everyone is split into smaller groups and a short quiz is given out and afterwards a discussion on what you've learned that week. You learn so much about where the world came from and how we got to where we are today. However, depending on the set of teachers you get (referred to as a "Team") you're class/workload/quizzes may be absolutely horrible or amazing.

ps. Try to get into althete Civ...much easier

Done With Civ?

A lot of people complain about Providence College's Development of Western Civilization program, but it's part of what makes the school different and the program has many strengths. Every student is required to take two years of Civ, studying the development of western civilization from mythical times to modern day through four different disciplines: history, literature, theology and philosophy. That way, a well-rounded (if a little Catholic biased -- after all, Providence IS a Catholic college) understanding of western civilization can be gained. People may complain about Civ while they're in it, but once they're out, most will agree - it really wasn't that bad.

Facts

Traditions
  • The Clam Jam: The Clam Jam is an annual event coordinated by BOP. Held on Hendricken field there is food, games, and music. It is key to stop by the Clam Jam even if it is just en route to going out. There are alcoholic beverages for those with proper ID, but many get around that by pre-gaming before they go. It’s a great way to start off the year, kick off the weekend, and spend a fun night on campus.
  • Junior Ring Weekend: Junior Ring Weekend is better known as JRW and is the culmination of a year long preparation by the JRW Core. The entire weekend is themed and focuses around the junior class receiving their class rings. While JRW events begin the end of sophomore year with Ring Premiere, the real fun is the weekend that epitomizes the junior year at PC. Nothing compares to JRW, except maybe the week-long events of graduation. Friday night of this weekend is better known as Club Night, where the junior class and their dates head out to a club rented out specifically for them. The following night is Formal Night, another opportunity to dress to the nines. The class is taken to a secret location, usually a banquet hall or hotel ballroom, where they proceed to relive Club Night, only in formal attire. Sunday’s ceremonies include a mass, where the rings are blessed and distributed, and brunch. Everyone looks forward to JRW, stresses over getting a date, and knows what they will wear practically by the end of freshman year.
  • Late-Night Madness: Once called Midnight Madness, this event marks the official start to the basketball season, which at PC, is a big deal. The night is spent in the Mullaney gym awaiting the strike of 12 when the basketball teams can officially begin practice sessions. Midnight Madness usually sports a variety of entertainment acts including games, music, free T-shirts, and the Pep Band. The cheerleaders and dance team both do a routine, although the latter is always better than the former. Since PC is so big on sports and school spirit, this is a must-attend event.
  • Mr. PC: Mr. PC isn’t just like any other beauty pageant. It gives the women of PC, who do outnumber the men, a chance to oogle some of PC’s finest specimens. Annually, one male will be crowned Mr. PC after displaying casual style, a talent, formal wear, and answering a question put to them by the judges. Mr. PC was once graciously hosted by Dennis Haskins, better known as Saved by the Bell’s Mr. Belding. Mr. PC always promises a few laughs, even if they aren’t accompanied by a “Hey-hey-hey, what’s going on here?” from television’s favorite principal.
  • Newport Trip: The Newport Trip is availble to incoming freshman for a fee of about $25. Labor Day, while all the returning students are cramming on to campus and unloading their stuff, the freshmen are taken by bus to Newport where they are free to spend the day however they choose. Usually, the day’s events consist mainly of walking, shopping, eating, and maybe visiting a few mansions, but the Newport trip is the perfect opportunity to get to know your fellow classmates. Besides, who doesn’t like spending a day at the beautiful seaport?
  • Sophomore Outdoor Ball: Sophomore Outdoor Ball, or SOB, is a fantastic night for the sophomore class to come together, get dressed up, and party the night away. Traditionally it is held in a tent on Hendricken field, although preparations are made to move it indoors if it rains. Although stilettos may sink into the soft grass, the night is one of the most memorable events of sophomore year. In true PC style, many of those you encounter at SOB may be under the influence of alcohol, which can make the dance floor slightly dangerous, but fun nonetheless. You may even get a glimpse of PC security shaking their groove thing as the night progresses.
Urban Legends
  • Aquinas 4th floor is haunted by the girls who died in the fire many years ago (no really, it is).
  • McDermott Hall is ranked as one of the most promiscuous dorms in the country.
  • The Dore basement is haunted.
