Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Be prepared to bleed black and gold, prospective students! As a Big Ten university, Purdue (and its students) take great pride in its athletic teams. During football season, there is no other place to be other than tailgating before the games and cheering in the stadium stands. Boilermaker pride is rampant. Purdue’s football team consistently attends bowl games, including the Rose Bowl, and the women’s basketball team has participated in the NCAA National Tournament several times.

Thanks to the prolific club sports and intramural sports, there are plenty of opportunities for students to get involved in the athletic life. But if you don’t see your favorite sport listed, you’re always welcome to start up your own club. The increasing international population at Purdue has added to the amount of athletic clubs as everyone brings a sport from their home country. Athletics is one of the big equalizers at Purdue University, and it is one of the best ways to make lifelong friends. Attending games is a distinctive Boilermaker tradition. If you don’t feel your heart swell with pride when the black and gold beat down their opponents, then be prepared to be placed in the minority.

Purdue's Sports

The sports at Purdue are as fun as the fans make it. It is a lot of fun to cheer the teams on either from the stadium, or the residence hall lounges. The only problem is when we lose to IU, which causes much too much drama. Overall, the sports are great and I enjoy having fun at the games with my friends.

Supportive and Energetic

Although the football and basketball teams were/are a little rought this year, they get a huge fan base to come and support them. Same goes for the Women's basketball, Volleyball, and Soccer teams who did/are doing outstanding this year. The athletic facilities around campus allow for the average college student to work out just like a Purdue athlete could. It give everyone a shot to shine. Boiler Up!

Basketball and Football

Purdue has amazing sports. Basketball is HUGE! Football is also a big deal, but basketball trumps. Other sports are big too, but not very many people go to watch them.

The recreational facilities are under construction now, but the building looks amazing and is supposed to be done within the next year.

Most Popular Sports

All varsity-level sports are extremely popular, but if you’re attending Purdue, the three sports to which we all hail are football, women’s basketball, and men’s basketball. On game days, the campus shuts down, as everyone either attends the game or watches it from home. Let’s go Boilers!

Most Overlooked Teams

Rugby is one of the most interesting and misunderstood sports here in the United States. Barely any students are aware of the Purdue men’s rugby club. Check out one of their games for an entertaining afternoon.

School Spirit

Purdue students bleed black and gold. Boilermakers are proud of their top-notch athletic teams and are fiercely loyal to the University. Look around you on an average day, and you’ll find that most of the students are sporting some type of Purdue clothing, be it sweatshirts, T-shirts, or a hat. During football season, you will cheer for your school or be subjected to the wrath of devoted fans that will call you (gasp) a Hoosier supporter! The different schools within the University are extremely dedicated to their fields of study, and be prepared to face the ongoing ribbing between the engineering school and the school of liberal arts and sciences. If attending a university where school pride reigns supreme, Purdue is definitely the university for you.

Getting Tickets

Tickets can be obtained through the athletic ticket office. Students, faculty, and staff get discounted rates on tickets. You can place orders online at purduesports.ocsn.com/marketplace/tickets/tickets-body.html, or by calling (800) 497-7678 for more information. To obtain tickets, you must fill out a ticket application at either the athletic ticket office or through the Web site listed above.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Anywhere on Purdue’s campus. Check out the Tree Tour (a tree-by-tree brochure is available in the union), or just meander around the horticultural area during the spring months when the gardens have been planted.

Did You Know?

Purdue Pete, represents all Purdue students. He is present in every home game. Four students annually are chosen to be Purdue Pete. They have to maintain a 2.0 GPA and report to University Hall weekly to have their academic progress monitored.
