Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The opinions about diversity at Purdue fall into two distinct camps: those who feel that Purdue is extremely diverse, and those who feel that it couldn’t be more monochromatic. The percentages don’t lie; most of Purdue’s students are Caucasian. However, if you’re looking for a pocket of diversity, you’ll be able to find it. Six percent doesn’t sound like much, but six percent of 30,000 students equals 1,800 students of foreign ethnicity. Students seem to feel that there is a place for everyone at Purdue.

Minority groups are not the most visible organizations on Purdue’s campus, but Purdue does its best to raise awareness with Black History Month, Gaypril, and the like. While people from more polychromatic regions might feel Purdue to be lacking in the diversity department, a bit of searching will expose the plethora of ethnic organizations, clubs, and populations scattered through the campus. International students would do well to check out the International Center, and students of the Islamic faith should contact the Muslim Center. The Black Cultural Center and the Latino Cultural Center sponsor many events throughout the school year and are aimed at promoting awareness.

Diversity at Purdue

There is a huge international population at purdue particularly considering our computer science and engineering schools. Having friends from all over the world is a wonderful experience I have had and I have never seen anyone demean them or heard of them doing so based on their race. Pursue seems to me to be a very accepting place, even celebrating its diversity.

Ethnic/Racial Diversity

Purdue University is very racially diverse. In all of my classes there are people from different races and even different countries. There is a lot of study abroad, students really benefit from it. Even the teachers are racially diverse, not only the student body.

Facts

Gay Pride

The acceptance of gay students at Purdue is “improving because of the current administration,” according to the National Executive Director of Delta Lambda Phi. The LesBiGay network sponsors events on campus, such as “Gaypril,” in attempts to strengthen alternative lifestyle acceptance at Purdue.

Political Activity

Most students are conservative Republicans, but there are also a great number of liberals on campus. It is a common sight to see protesters marching on the Memorial Mall over political issues or staging hunger strikes to protest sweatshop conditions. Purdue students seem generally apathetic about their own student government, and most do not vote for campus government elections.

Most Common Religions

Christianity, Islam, and Judaism are the most popular religions on campus. There are many Christian associations on campus that hold demonstrations during the year. Those of the Islamic faith would do well to check out the Muslim Center, which is just a short walk away from inner campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Purdue’s minority clubs are rising in visibility. The international population is very well established. Minorities of all types will be able to find a club catering to them, but some have more visibility than others. The International Center, the Muslim Center, the Black Cultural Center, and the Latino Cultural Center are all hubs for Purdue’s minority demographics.

Did You Know?

Purdue had the largest international student enrollment for a state university in 2008, with students from over 146 countries.
