College Prowler Take
With 29 percent of the Purdue student population being Greek, it’s no surprise that the Greeks are an important aspect of campus life. Events such as Homecoming and Grand Prix are the chances for sororities and fraternities to shine. However, they do not, by any means, dominate the social scene. Students not involved in the Greek system expressed their ability to have fun, make friends, attend parties, and be part of organizations without rushing or becoming involved in a sorority or fraternity. Several students surveyed expressed somewhat disparaging remarks about the Greek lifestyle, but those who were involved realized that Greeks play a very active role in many aspects of campus life, becoming involved in community service and various charities. Those who are members of Greek life hail the system; those outside of it are content to let the Greeks do their own thing. If you’re interested in attending fraternity and sorority parties, and you’re not a member of the Greek system, you’ll have to use your friends who are able to get you inside the houses. One very nice thing about the Greek life at Purdue is that it gives members a sense of pride and association, but it is not so all-encompassing that it doesn’t leave time for members to pursue other activities around campus as well. Students who wish to stay Greek-free have no problems living their four years at Purdue. Even if you are not part of the Greek community, you are able to fit in just fine. Students who aren't part of the Greek system have their fair share of stuff to do around campus as well.

Greek Life is huge at Purdue. According to the Greeks, everyone who’s anyone is a Greek here. I was Greek for a while, but it wasn’t for me. I did meet a lot of people with whom I will be friends for a long time. I recommend taking part in rush—no matter what you decide about joining Greek life. |

There is a Greek system, but in no way does it dominate the social scene. You often hear of campuses where you either join a frat or sorority, or you will be a loner. I have never been into the Greek life and have had a blast at Purdue. No one looks down on you one way or the other, so if you decide on Greek life, you will enjoy it, but don’t worry about it if you decide to avoid Greek life. |

Greek life is big at Purdue, and it offers a lot of social and service options. It does not, however, dominate. There are lots of other things to do. |

The Greek system is a positive experience for those looking to be involved during their college years. There is more than beer and parties to being Greek. From experience, I can tell you that we do focus on our education and community involvement. We raise money for charities and volunteer in the community. It is a great way to network and meet other people who have similar interests, but are not the same as you. There is diversity in the Greek system that reflects the diversity on campus. |

Greek life is there, but I had more friends not in it than in it. It’s certainly there for people who are interested, but it’s not a key to a social scene or anything. It’s not necessary to be in, but a lot of the people in it have fun. |
