Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

With 29 percent of the Purdue student population being Greek, it’s no surprise that the Greeks are an important aspect of campus life. Events such as Homecoming and Grand Prix are the chances for sororities and fraternities to shine. However, they do not, by any means, dominate the social scene. Students not involved in the Greek system expressed their ability to have fun, make friends, attend parties, and be part of organizations without rushing or becoming involved in a sorority or fraternity. Several students surveyed expressed somewhat disparaging remarks about the Greek lifestyle, but those who were involved realized that Greeks play a very active role in many aspects of campus life, becoming involved in community service and various charities. Those who are members of Greek life hail the system; those outside of it are content to let the Greeks do their own thing.

If you’re interested in attending fraternity and sorority parties, and you’re not a member of the Greek system, you’ll have to use your friends who are able to get you inside the houses. One very nice thing about the Greek life at Purdue is that it gives members a sense of pride and association, but it is not so all-encompassing that it doesn’t leave time for members to pursue other activities around campus as well. Students who wish to stay Greek-free have no problems living their four years at Purdue. Even if you are not part of the Greek community, you are able to fit in just fine. Students who aren't part of the Greek system have their fair share of stuff to do around campus as well.

1 in 5 Are Greek

At Purdue, 20% of the student population is involved in some sort of social fraternity or sorority. There are several "Greek rows." Depending on the house, people are viewed differently. Each house has its own reputation, and how people view you is often related to that house's particular characterization. There are houses for specific majors, particularly engineering houses. Overall, it isn't a bad Greek system.

The Greek life at Purdue is very large and diverse. You don't have to be Greek to be known on this big campus, but most people are involved in Greek life.

Greek Life at Purdue

The Greek system here at Purdue is one that I am quite proud of even though I am not a part of one. The partying at Purdue is kept to a minimum and we are not known as a party school to many other colleges. The thing that I am most impressed about is the fact that the Greek students take the community volunteering very seriously and their philanthropy is a big deal to them. I am not a Greek student and yet I do not look at students that are a part of a Greek life in any other way than I would a non-Greek student. They all tend to be very educated and especially the students that are in very difficult majors who decide to join Greek life. There are many different varieties of Greek housing that are available on campus. We have 48 fraternities, 33 sororities, and 12 cooperative houses on campus. One of these being the Delta Delta Delta sorority which is one of the largest sorority houses in the nation. Needless to say, if a student is interested in Greek life, they have many options to choose from.
