Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Ladies and gentlemen, the consensus is in: no matter who or what you’re attracted to, you’ll be able to find it at Purdue. The girls come out the definite winners; with about one-and-a-half men to each woman, the odds are in your favor, ladies. And it seems that the ratio is not the only thing going for you; according to Purdue’s female population, the men aren’t too hard on the eyes. Gentlemen, Purdue is not without its share of female beauties. After all, the former Miss Indiana and her first runner-up were both students of Purdue, and a jaunt past any sorority house will show you that, indeed, pretty women are everywhere. Don’t think of the unfair girl-to-guy ratio as a deterrent; instead, think of it as a challenge.

While Purdue does not appear to host the sexiest population in the Big Ten, students will say that, overall, people are rather attractive. An underlying grumble about Abercrombie & Fitch wearers permeates this agreement (alongside the eternal complaint that anybody worth looking at is already taken), but it seems that there are plenty of down-to-earth, straight-shooting students to offset the preppy population. The author’s final thought? On a campus of 30,000 people your own age, it is mathematically certain that you will find at least one of these other students attractive.

Not in My Major

A lot of the technical majors are notorious for lacking girls, but Purdue has a lot of other majors with plenty of girls. You're just not going to see them in class if you come to study Engineering.

There Are All Kinds of People at Purdue.

Any type of person you are looking for Purdue has it. There are non-midwesterns, international students, country kids, the list goes on and on. Most people don't dress up for class. Sweatpants, pajama pants, and jeans are the norm. Also, some people here date and others just hookup, so whatever you want, I'm sure you can find what you need.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

Purdue students study hard, but they also like to party hard. Thanks to the core requirements that every student is required to take (history, math, science, and the like), just striking up a conversation with that cute coed sitting next to you will net you a friend, if not always a date. The campus activities (including, but not limited to, residence hall outings, club callouts, and performances) are abundant through the year. They are fun and easy ways to meet members of the opposite sex. Although students are fiercely loyal to their schools and majors, no social hierarchy dominates Purdue's social scene—if you're willing to take the plunge, you'll find it there for you.

Hookups or Relationships?

Whatever you want, you should be able to find. While many students have met their life's partner at Purdue and settled into deep, meaningful relationships, there are also many people willing to engage in casual, relationship-free hookups.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

The mating rituals of Purdue students revolve around that place where everybody knows your name—the bars. Students from all walks of life, majors, and sexual preferences come to the bars in scores to hang out with their friends, meet people, and maybe even eventually date. Because much of the social scene at Purdue revolves around the bars, you'll find that many people end up dating people outside of their major. However, if the bar scene isn’t really your thing, it’s as easy as pie for freshmen to meet attractive people in a rather unlikely place—the classroom. Since you’ll be attending many large lectures that are required for a great amount of majors, you’ve got your pick of the best and the brightest. Strike up a conversation with that cute engineer sitting next to you in your history class, and ask if you can be study buddies.

Dress Code

Sometimes, you can't tell whether a student at Purdue is going to class or to a club. A great number of students look like they just walked out of the pages of an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog, and plenty others dress to the nines even when they're going to their 7:30 a.m. math class. However, you'll also find a large percentage of the population that wears sweats, flannel shirts, baggy T-shirts, and sometimes even pajamas. The rest of the students sport gear that waver between these two extremes. It's anything and everything goes.
