College Prowler Take
The University area has a huge amount of housing to offer. Apartment complexes are lucky to get 85 percent occupancy, which means housing sometimes becomes more affordable as fall semester approaches. However, most students will tell you that the best time to start looking for apartments is as soon as you decide to move off campus. Students who chose to live off campus are overwhelmingly happy with their decision. Off-campus housing at Purdue can mean an apartment that’s a five-minute walk to campus, and it is much cheaper than living in University residence halls. Students may grumble slightly about the price of off campus living at Purdue, but the prices you will pay at West Lafayette are much lower than apartments at other colleges, especially with so many apartment complexes fighting each other for business. Also, since many apartments are within walking distance of campus, and shuttles run for free from campus to the major apartment complexes, a car is more of a luxury than a necessity. Purdue has provided a major housing boom for the city. Many old homes situated near campus buildings are bought by property managers and renovated into efficiencies. These types of housing options are usually the best, as the houses are newly re-modeled and available at a lesser price than a proper apartment building. It is fairly easy to find an apartment that suits your needs, as they are abundant.

Off-campus housing is everywhere, and new complexes are springing up daily. Fortunately for the consumer, there is actually a housing surplus, so rental offices price to sell. Note: it is much, much cheaper to live in Lafayette than in West Lafayette. The further you get from campus, the lower the prices. Of course, you might want to have a car before you move far away. |

It can be very convenient, but expensive. But, if you’re ready to be more independent, and not live in a residence hall, there are really nice places to live that will cater to students. Check those first. |

It is definitely worth it—if you have a car. There are a bunch of resort-style apartments within driving distance from campus, and they are all very affordable. Even without a car, there are a few nice apartments available in the area. |

It’s totally worth it, living off campus. The residence halls are like your parents, only worse. |

Housing off campus after freshman year is definitely worth it. There are some really nice apartments at really great rates! You have to do the shopping, though. Invest the time to look at everything so you can make a good decision. |
