College Prowler Take
Students at Purdue feel overwhelmingly safe and secure on campus, thanks to its 200-plus yellow call-boxes, its patrolling police, and its free evening escort service. Residence halls are about as well protected as Fort Knox, requiring IDs and several keyed doors to reach living areas. It appears that the biggest crime at Purdue is petty theft, usually from students leaving residence hall rooms unlocked. As one student states, “Purdue is so safe that it’s almost boring.”
Thanks to the devoted vigilance of the police, students should feel quite safe on campus if they practice common sense. Female students should not walk alone at night, but thanks to the free escort service, there is no need to do so. For those who feel the need for self-defense classes, check with the Purdue Police, the residence halls, and the Recreational Sports Center. There are a variety of programs taught during the year that are free and practical.

West Lafayette is a small town, and it’s very safe to walk around campus alone, even at night. There are yellow call-boxes wired directly to the Purdue Police Department every 100 yards (they say that if you hit one call-box, a squad car will be waiting by the next one that you run to). Also, all of the residence halls are locked down at 11:00 p.m., after which you have to swipe your ID. |

Generally speaking, campus is very safe. There is very little crime past petty theft, which occurs mostly in the residence halls where people leave their rooms unlocked and doors open. There are emergency phones located all over campus and underground in the University tunnel system. |

I never recommend that ladies walk alone at night, regardless of the place. But I have never known any of my friends to have had problems when it comes to safety. |

The campus is well lit with many emergency boxes in case you need them. I’ve never felt uncomfortable walking around alone at night. |

Security and safety is good. I’ve never felt uncomfortable, but I wouldn’t recommend walking around by yourself in your jammies at four in the morning—unless you’re on the way to a very early breakfast club. |
