Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Radford University offers an incredibly unique experience in a small-town environment. The small size of the University allows for a much more personal connection with the faculty and other students. Professors make it their mission to create an engaging learning environment, going above and beyond when a student makes the effort to ask for help. Professors are more than willing to write recommendations, assist in classroom issues, and be fantastic sounding boards for academic advancement. The goal of Radford academia is to better the students at all costs. The social life is also a bonus of attending such a small school. With a small population, the majority of students knows one another fairly well. They party together, go to classes together, and spend quality time together during campus activities. The nightlife is a legend among the colleges of Virginia, and the parties are incredible. But, even if you don’t like to drink until you can't stand up, there are plenty of things to do like bowling, playing pool or pingpong, or checking out a movie.

The town of Radford is small, but within miles of several hotspots for action. Virginia Tech is 15 minutes away, Roanoke is less than an hour, and there are several mountainous hiking trails and camping areas nearby. What it boils down to is that Radford University is a “what you make of it” experience. If students put in the effort to go to class and engage in out-of-class activities, their time at Radford will be incredible. The friends you make will be lasting connections that continue long after graduation. At the start of college, every student is handed the opportunity to make something great out of their experience, and Radford provides many tools along the way to help students ensure it is worthwhile.

Education Major

I've never had an internship before. I'm about to go into student teaching next semester. We will not be paid, but we will learn so much from our cooperating teacher. It's all about the learning experience and learn from mistakes. Right now, we're being prepared by learning how to make effective lesson plans, learning how to teach different subjects, doing professional work such as read-alouds, conferences, etc.

Deaf Education

Radford University is the only university in the state of Virginia that has a Deaf Education program (which is what I'm majoring in). I love that RU offers this program, and our advisor is crazy dedicated to her students. I hope that the school gets more attention for this program, and I hope other schools open a Deaf Education program.

Always Something to Do

Radford University has a student center where everybody usually goes to hangout- the "Bonnie". The Bonnie has several different food joints, bowling, movie theatre, ping pong tables, billiards tables, and more. RU also has a big athletic center that is always clean, a big library (and I LOVE the study rooms and the coffee shop) and a couple gyms. Also, it's really interesting to go into the science building to the planetarium, the fossil/dinosuar exhibit, etc. There is always something to do on campus!
