Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The average student at Radford University is white, heterosexual, female, middle to upper class, and Republican. However, this doesn't mean that there isn't diversity on campus. Student organizations are constantly striving for more diversity, and clubs promoting awareness, tolerance, and international issues are very easy to find. The University sponsors an international and intercultural week every year to promote awareness of other cultures and nationalities. International students often provide recipes from home or spread the word about their country at several events planned for campus.

Spectrum (the LGBTQA group on campus) recently began hosting a drag show to promote tolerance and awareness of the growing gay, lesbian, transsexual, bisexual, and transgender community. La Sociedad Hispanica has hosted several salsa and Latin dance classes. The Radford University bookstore sells shirts that benefit Darfur, and students often speak out for social action. The College Republicans and College Democrats have very active mailing lists and meetings, and encourage college students to participate in the selection of members of local, state, and federal government. Religious clubs and organizations are plentiful on Radford's campus, especially those of the Christian faith. There are several different clubs that include worship, weekend retreats, and weekly meetings. Radford is very open to the formation of clubs that promote diversity in religion, race, sexual preference, and politics.

Not So Diverse

Radford University is a place where the rich kids of northern virginia come and gather to have a grand old time spending daddy's money and making a mockery out of the institution. However, in my degree I meet many wonderfully diverse individuals who so willingly accept one into their environment.

It's a White Sea

Radford University is really lacking in this area. It is predominantly white and female at this school. I am sure that every race, creed, color, religion, sexual orientation, etc. attends this school, but it is over 85% white. There are students that are rich and there are also students that come from poverty. Most of the students at Radford express a disinterest and general apathy towards politics and social issues. The area itself leans right on the political spectrum. When I was at Radford I never saw any serious clashes over differing backgrounds. Generally the student body is accepting of other individuals from differing backgrounds.

Facts

Gay Pride

There is a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, and straight ally activist club on campus. Members work hard to bring change to the University by dispelling myths and minimizing prejudice. Its goal is to make Radford a school without labels and free of ignorance.

Political Activity

There are two active clubs supporting politics: College Republicans and Young Democrats. Both organizations are pretty active and have tables at the club fair, hold meetings, and e-mail information and minutes of meetings to all who are interested.

Economic Status

Most Radford students are middle or upper class.

Most Common Religions

Most students are Christian or Catholic. Mass is held every Sunday on campus, and there's a very involved Catholic club. There are also several Christian or Christianity-based clubs. Only one Jewish club has managed to make its way onto Radford’s list of organizations.

Minority Clubs on Campus

La Sociedad Hispanica is the local Spanish society which works to promote Hispanic awareness on the Radford campus.
