Quick Stats

School Slang
  • ABP: Au Bon Pain
  • The Bomb Shelter: What the worst party house of the year is called
  • The Bonnie: The Bonnie Hurlburt Student Center
  • Darkside: Jefferson Street side of campus
  • Lightside: Tyler Avenue side of campus
  • Mess/Messy: Usually describes a drunk individual
  • Shiesty: The act of being fake, lying, or unreal as a person
  • Trife: Anything that is shady or not quite accurate
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Campus is triangular instead of rectangular, which can be quite difficult when trying to navigate during your first few days of school.
  • It can get difficult dealing with the different campus offices.
  • It is almost impossible to finish in four years.
  • You will get bored if you don't have a car to get away from campus.
Tips to Succeed
  • Be aware of Quadfest (see traditions). It will happen even if it’s not official, so be smart about your Quadfest partying.
  • Don’t be the belligerent drunk who is plastered nightly. It gets old and is abusive to your friendships.
  • Don’t go crazy when you first get to college. Freshman year is the easiest year to get the best grades, so do well at the beginning and it won’t seem so hard to keep your GPA up as you move on to higher-level classes.
  • Go to the Club Fair in the beginning of the year. There is lots of free swag and information about things to do.
  • If you want to join Greek life, get to know the fraternity/sorority before rushing. You will have a much easier chance of getting in.
  • Make sure you are prepared for college-level courses. Some classes may seem easy, but most will be harder than you thought.
  • Manage your time wisely, and make sure to study. Don’t wait until the last minute to study for a test or do a project.
  • Take responsibility for yourself and go to your 8 a.m. classes. Or, if you know you won't get up for them, don't take early classes.
  • Take the initiative and responsibility for your life and what happens to you on campus.
  • Talk to your professors. They are all fairly open and pretty cool.

Deaf Education

Radford University is the only university in the state of Virginia that has a Deaf Education program (which is what I'm majoring in). I love that RU offers this program, and our advisor is crazy dedicated to her students. I hope that the school gets more attention for this program, and I hope other schools open a Deaf Education program.

Greek Life: Get Involved

In order to ensure the best college experience- pledge a fraternity or sorority. Greek life is HUGE at Radford. They're always involved with fun activities on and off campus, so the members are never bored. Plus, it's nice having a sisterhood or brotherhood of 70+ people who have your back no matter what.

Facts

Traditions Quadfest: Quadfest is a long-standing student tradition that usually happens during the third weekend in April and involves an inordinate amount of people from all over Virginia coming to Radford to get as absolutely drunk as possible. The school sponsored it at one point, and there used to be bands and other activities planned, but due to the amount of drunk and disorderly charges, the school revoked sponsorship and has tried to ban it. However, students have kept the tradition alive, and thousands still flock to Radford for a variety of drinking activities. The weather is usually great, and pickup games of football, kickball, softball, and ultimate Frisbee are played by students everywhere. Take caution, though: the police are not stupid and keep an eye on the students.
