Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Contrary to popular belief, Reedies are not athletic stars. However, despite the dearth of athletic activities on campus and the complete absence of varsity sports, Reedies do
enjoy sports (weather permitting). Although some of the student quotes may lead you to believe that Reedies shun the playing fields for the safety of their library, many enjoy being physically active. Both the women’s rugby team and the ultimate Frisbee team are popular fixtures on campus, and both travel to tournaments and do reasonably well for teams of a school Reed’s size. Besides those two teams, Reedies enjoy playing for other club teams that exist around campus, from soccer to basketball. Otherwise, students generally prefer studying and partying to sporting; the usually inclement weather often prohibits all but the most extreme activities.

Aside from sporting for fun, Reed requires students to complete six quarters (or three semesters) of physical education classes. Reed’s Sports Center offers a diverse assortment of classes that students can take to fulfill their requirement: different types of yoga, ultimate Frisbee, fencing, bowling, snowboarding, kayaking, judo, tai-chi, multiple dancing styles, and myriad other options. Students greatly appreciate and love the variety of offered PE classes, and often use their requirement to branch out and explore the wide world of sports.

A Hobby, Not a Competition

Reed doesn't have "real" sports teams. We have groups of students who play sports in place of P.E., and they sometimes play games with students from other schools. However, these teams are the exception, not the rule. Depending on where your dorm is, you may spend the whole year without hearing anything about team sports.

On the other hand, the P.E. classes are quite excellent. There are a variety of activities ranging from meditation to ballroom dancing to weight lifting. You won't be bored, and the "obligation" is small (and generally pleasurable).

Sports...?

Reed has no varsity sports. We don't recruit for sports. We do, however, have some intense sports teams, namely Rugby and Ultimate. Our Rugby and Ultimate Frisbee teams may not be stellar, but they take themselves and their respective sports very seriously, playing hard and fun. We also have a lot of recreational sports and tennis courts, as well as just about any court you could desire in our Sports Center. I love sports and the attitude Reedies have towards sports, though this is not the place for some one who wants to be on the NBA after college.

Most Popular Sports

The most popular sports at Reed are rugby and ultimate Frisbee. Both teams competitively engage their northwest rivals. In terms of PE classes, bowling, yoga, Frisbee, and the dance classes are most popular. Many people do participate in weight training and use the weight room. Also, people do receive gym credit for actively swimming in the Reed pool.

Most Overlooked Teams

Men’s basketball gets little love from the student body. Additionally, although lots of people enjoy soccer, the campus as a whole rarely stops to take notice of the sport.

School Spirit

School spirit at Reed usually falls into two categories: academic and athletic. In terms of athletics, Reed possesses almost no school spirit. Although a few die-hards exist who unwaveringly support the Frisbee and rugby teams, most students remain ever-apathetic to the sporting events of Reed. Academically, however, Reedies show a great deal of school spirit. Reed students proudly believe that their school is among the best, if not the best, in America, possessing the most knowledgeable professors, the best curriculum, and a great combination of classics reading and personal insight. Often, Reedies even brag amongst themselves over how much more work they have than their peers.

Getting Tickets

Tickets to sporting events do not exist. All sporting events at Reed are free to the public; just go and watch.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Walking around the Reed Canyon provides a picturesque view of the flora and fauna of a wildlife refuge.
