Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most Reed students believe that, while Reed does possess a prevalent drug scene, that scene doesn’t pressure students to become part of it. Although drugs do float rather freely around campus, those that choose to do those drugs respect other students while using them. Rarely do students feel pressured to use drugs, and rarely do those who use drugs use them in such a way as to make others around them uncomfortable. Essentially, Reed students respect the desires and comfort zones of other students. Be warned: a sizably-large drug scene does exist at Reed. The fallacy comes in stating that it is larger or any worse than the drug scenes at other schools. At other schools, though, the drug scene simply isn’t as open as it is at Reed. People attending those schools do drugs behind closed doors and in secrecy. When in need, these people are afraid to go to school authorities for help in fear of repercussion. Reed differs because our drug scene does not hide behind closed doors; we openly admit to using drugs in moderation and generally attempt to use them responsibly in safe conditions. Although the administration at Reed has become slightly more conservative towards drug and alcohol use over the past few years, the drug scene has not undergone much change as a result. In years past, people were known to very publicly smoke pot in the open, grassy areas of campus.

The philosophy of most Reedies is that being out in the open and safe is a whole lot better than being secretive and potentially harmful to yourself or others. Furthermore, the compassionate and understanding position of Community Safety enables students to not fear seeking help. Getting a little talk on responsible drug use and safe practices is better than overdosing alone in your room.

Drug Scene Present, but No Pressure

The drug scene is very present, though people tend to respect others when doing them. If you want to stay sub-free, you are more than able to do so. If you don't wan't to remain sub free, there are many opportunities to do so as well. Most parties are alcohol fed, and there is a fair amount of people smoking pot, though not as many as Reed's reputation would let you to believe. The administration is doing everything they can to keep the students safe, and there is usually no public substance use (other than alcohol).

Less Than Imagined

It really depends on who you hang out with. People don't push drugs on anyone, but there is definitely a party scene and a group of people who take a lot of drugs.

Reedies and Drugs

At a school full of liberal, bright people, there will be drug use--especially when it's a school that generates as much stress as Reed does on a day-to-day basis. Saying that, there is drug use at all colleges and universities around the country, and to believe otherwise would be foolish. At Reed, we are more open about our drug use that other schools keep under covers, and it's because we care about each other. We know the pros and cons of the drugs we use, and we want to keep everyone safe no matter what decisions they make. Because of this, we tell our peers and friends when we do or imbibe certain substances. It's just about the best environment around for Drug Safety, and though there is substance use, it is completely not peer-pressure-induced, and is not at all necessary for fitting in socially. Reed gets a lot of dirt on its "Drugginess" and it is not deserving of it. We are obviously doing something right, because of how many PhD's we produce and how positively graduate programs view Reed graduates.
