Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At times, it becomes hard to tell whether or not someone at Reed is attractive or not. Mummified in unending layers of clothing to protect against the cold, rainy conditions, most people look akin to a mobile pile of winter clothing. Unless you happen to possess a fetish for scarves and umbrellas, then your best bet would be to wait until people have unwrapped their true selves from beneath their protective layers. On the surface and under wraps, Reed guys and girls are strikingly different from their state school counterparts. Taking a glance at the Reed campus on a Friday night engenders a different feel from a glance at a larger state school; students do not throng to designated sectors of campus and the surrounding neighborhoods in search of a bubbling nightlife of jazz and liquor. Instead, Reed students generally quietly celebrate the end of a tiring week either with friends or by themselves in the campus library. Don’t get me wrong—Reed students enjoy partying as much as the next student; we simply do not have as much time to party.

Furthermore, as a gathering of individuals, Reed supports personal experimentation and choice. Although not an overly-promiscuous campus, Reedies generally enjoy slightly more sexual liberation than the average society does. In short, Reedies are human like anyone else. You can describe us according to our looks if you want, but doing so would do us a disservice, as such trivial concerns do not dominate our campus. To echo a few of the student quotes, you should not come to Reed if you’re looking for a place where you can ogle the student body.

Great People, but Shy and Busy

Most people here are wonderfully interesting and usually passionate about something, whether it be academic, political, or some particular skill or hobby. People are generally not unattractive, but not a huge amount of capital is placed on being super hot. Most people are great to be friends with, but are often too shy to initiate relationships, or don't have the time to put into them what with the heavy academics.

Not a Concern

The people at Reed are, for the most part, coequal with the general population. On the other hand, that doesn't mean that Reed students are the same as everywhere else. Reedies aren't preoccupied with their appearance, so they tend to (but don't invariably) have a relatively relaxed look. Not only is appearance not a major concern, but we are generally too busy for elaborate (and potentially misleading) appearances.

Nerds, Hippies, and Hipsters

Reedies are wonderful, awkward, beautiful, granola, nerdy, and against labels. I wouldn't say the majority of students here are of the stereotypical "hot" description, though if you're into happy, adorable people, then this is the place for you--especially if nerds are to you the new blondes (not that they're mutually exclusive here or anything). I absolutely love Reedies and all of their quirks.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

The social scene at Reed is not your traditional college scene. By not having any fraternities or sororities, and by heavily emphasizing academics, Reed has turned its student body into more of a young think-tank than a party-oriented group only half interested in studying. Although Reed does have its liberating experiences, the general social scene centers on the academic and personal lives of the students.

Hookups or Relationships?

A few of the yearly balls and formals (Winter Formal, the Fetish Ball, Drag Ball, Spring Formal, Harvest Ball, and the like) provide the best opportunity for random hookups. However, random hookups sometimes occur at weekend parties. On the other hand, maintaining a Reed relationship can be tricky unless you are willing to devote a great deal of time (that could be spent studying) to a significant other. Reed relationships do occur, but usually are problematic or short-lived. Usually, there are a few Reed couples around campus that everyone knows. Essentially, dating and hookups are less prevalent here than at other schools, but they do happen.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

At Reed, student clubs and dorms present the best places to meet potential significant others. Although some Reedies may find meeting people at the yearly formals and balls exciting, people that either live with you or share similar interests as you offer better opportunities to find worthwhile candidates. Generally, those relationships or hookups that start at a formal or ball flame out quickly, after mutual desires have been quenched. Oppositely, people living or participating in activities with you are more likely to want to get to know you better (for friendships or otherwise) based on who you are and not for other reasons.
