Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students feel very safe at Reed. Reed’s Community Safety department is not a police force. Reed community safety officers (CSOs) patrol Reed’s grounds, enforce rules, and generally check up on the student body. Unlike many police forces on campuses across America, Reed CSOs seek to ensure the safety and well-being of Reed students before sending them off to the local authorities. The majority of Reed students agree that, despite the occasional theft of a bike or wallet, Reed’s CSOs do an outstanding job of protecting the community. Rarely do students feel in danger while on campus, and, if they do, Community Safety willingly provides an escort service at any hour of the night. In addition, Community Safety is easily accessible for any student with concerns, as the head of security has open doors for most of the day and provides a confidential place to speak freely about any concerns a student may have.

On the other side of campus, the Health and Counseling Center provides nearly free medical, personal, and emotional consultation, and cheap health care for students in need. No matter the health or personal emergency, the Health and Counseling Center willingly accepts walk-ins and appointments for students with concerns. Although sometimes slow in diagnosis and only possessing a trained nurse, the Health and Counseling Center adequately provides for the Reed community. If the problem is a bit too severe for them to handle, the Eastmoreland Hospital and Clinic is less than a block from Reed, and is equipped to handle many serious medical emergencies. Although problems do arise that neither Community Safety nor the Health and Counseling Center can manage, rarely do students feel that Community Safety is unable to assist them.

I Feel Safe During the Day.

Until very recently, when we had two armed robberies on campus at night, I felt very safe on campus all the time. I still feel very safe during the day, and our campus security has increased their presence at night.

Normal for the Average City of Portland's Size

For the most part, the school puts in a strong effort to make the campus a safe environment. CSO's (Community Safety Officers) are there to help students if they need it, while not breathing down the students' necks. There have been occasional armed robberies on campus, probably because the robbers know Reed is extremely affluent (about 48% of students need no financial aid). Whenever this happens, though, Community Safety is quick to send out an email notification and extra patrols, and contacts the Portland Police Department. For the most part, the Honor Principle applies and there are few thefts committed by actual Reed students; the ones that do occasionally happen seem to mostly be done by people outside the Reed community. It's not a gated community (which I wouldn't like anyway), but I have never felt unsafe at Reed.

I Feel Incredibly Safe

I have never once felt unsafe on Reed's campus. It is a small campus and Community Safety does its job very well, and Portland, OR is full of rather wonderful, interesting individuals. The crime in the neighborhood Reed's a part of is practically nonexistent, and most Reedies are very well-behaved. Despite this wonderful, secure and safe situation, this past year saw quite a bit of theft of rather valuable items, and there have been people from off-campus before who have taken items from vacant tables in the library, for example. Still, 99% of the time I feel 100% safe on this campus and in its buildings.
