Most Reedies do not have a strong grasp on Portland’s nightlife. Since the Portland nightlife mostly hinges on being 21 or older, most Reedies either stay on campus, visit off-campus parties, or wait until they are 21 to fully peruse Portland’s selections. Despite the age restrictions, Portland’s club and concert scene doesn’t fail to please. Portland offers numerous clubs with good drinks, live music, and all the dancing you could want. If you aren’t 21, then coffeehouses and other entertainment options are available, but they aren’t as prevalent as the clubs, concert halls, and bars. Reedies, although generally preferring to party on or around campus, do occasionally leave the library to venture to a theater, coffeehouse, or around town. Additionally, students find that most non-club places (with a few coffeehouse exceptions) close rather early for their tastes, with many places shutting their doors between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. In all, nightlife exists in Portland, but isn’t as conducive to people under 21 as many Reedies would like.

I don’t really hear about people going to clubs that often. The Lutz is a popular bar, but I think that is just because it is nearby. As for parties, I don’t really go to parties. I guess they must exist, I’m just not exactly sure where. Mostly, I get the sense that people hang out in their dorms and drink on the weekends. I live in the substance-free dorm, however, so I don’t have much experience with that. |

Reed parties are usually gatherings of friends, rather than general events. |

I don’t go to many parties, although the number has increased in the past year, as far as I can tell. The Portland Police are pretty strict about parties and often like to bust them up before they get good. As far as bars are concerned, I won’t be 21 until Saturday, so I wouldn’t really know about that. |

Parties are common at Reed, both on campus and in off-campus housing (which many Reedies choose). O-Week is notoriously a one-week-long party. Reedies always claim to be too busy to do anything but work, but one thing is clear: when they do party, they make a point of it. |

Parties on campus are sort of...
Parties on campus are sort of spotty. Some weekends there are many and some there are very few, but they are generally open to everyone. I have gone to parties where I knew almost nobody and still felt included. |

The local clubs, while nothing spectacular, often host musicians and have concerts that Reedies enjoy attending. These clubs are mostly 21 and over because they serve alcohol. The best clubs are as follows, and afterwards are the locations where Reedies attend concerts.
Bar Prowler
Most Reedies do not go to bars. Instead, they buy their own alcohol and drink in the comfort of their own homes. However, when Reedies do go out to drink, there are two particular places that interest them.
Organization Parties
Reedies know how to party on campus. Besides the occasional campus bonfire, numerous formals and balls occur throughout the year to satiate the on-campus partying needs; these include Winter Formal, Spring Formal, Harvest Ball, a Masquerade Ball, a Drag Ball, and a Fetish Ball. Additionally, after classes let out in the spring, the campus sponsors a three-day cathartic event called Renn Fayre, where the seniors celebrate the turning-in of their theses and everyone celebrates the end of classes.
Club Listings
The crystal ballroom hosts a plethora of concerts year-round. Many up-and-coming artists and established favorites play here.
They have all sorts of drinks and a fun atmosphere, including live music and DJs, which is a common spot for scenesters and punk kids. The Ohm 31 NW 1st Ave. Portland (503) 223-9919
When many big-name artists come to Portland, they play at the Aladdin. The drinks are moderately-priced, and many Reedies frequent events here.
Bar Listings
The preferred bar of 21-and-over Reedies, the Lutz offers very cheap Pabst Blue Ribbon beer ($1 per can). Also, there are pool tables and arcade-style games. The Lutz is near many Reed-friendly restaurants (the Delta), so an evening of hitting both the Lutz and these restaurants isn’t uncommon.
The Pub has cheap beer and is close to campus. Many Reedies enjoy getting a bit away and relaxing in whatever comfort can be found in a pub. There are pool tables and arcade-style games. The Pub at the End of the Universe 4107 SE 28th Ave. Portland (503) 235-0969
What to Do if You're Not 21
There are a few options if you’re not 21 and seek a late-night treat and possibly some music. The Pied Cow, mentioned earlier in the Off-Campus Dining section, is open late and has good ambiance. Additionally, there is the Rimsky-Korsakoffee House, which has live music, good treats for snacking, and an interesting bathroom. It is like the aforementioned Pied Cow (from the Off-Campus Dining section) with live music.
