Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Unlike Reed’s on-campus dining, the food options around Portland present a plethora of options. While many students enjoy walking a short distance from campus to enjoy either decent Oriental cuisine or fine Southern fare, many relish the opportunity to escape the Reed bubble and venture into downtown Portland. Additionally, while appreciating the food in the greater Portland area, Reed students rarely agree on a single restaurant to visit while off campus because of the diverse nature of both the restaurants around Portland and the tastes of Reedies. The dining options about Reed offer a complete array of delicious selections from all ethnic backgrounds. Although no Reed student can agree on any one restaurant that overwhelmingly catches their fancy, most Reedies frequent a short list of restaurants whose food tastes splendid and whose ambience is both friendly and relaxing.

From the Ethiopian cuisine of Jarra’s, to the all-night breakfasts of the Hotcake House, the restaurants that Reedies prefer usually fall into three categories: they have copious amounts of food for a reasonable price, offer an excellent window into another culture through a dining experience, or simply offer a delicious escape from the ever-tedious experience of on-campus or in-apartment dining. Furthermore, since most of the best off-campus dining options are within a short bus ride of Reed and won’t shrivel your wallet into an unidentifiable lump of leather, Reed’s off-campus dining situation is ideal and provides a diverse assortment of choices that allow any Reedie the chance to eat ethnically-varied, good food without wasting an entire evening on transportation, or an entire wallet’s contents on the price of a single meal.

Get Out There!

Portland is LOADED to the brim with little restaurants! We have the Food Carts, which, depending on the location, are open very late; we have many local, small business restaurants; and we have some larger chain restaurants. We have up-scale, and college-student affordable choices. Really, Portland is one of the more foodie of cities I've visited, so take advantage of it!

Restaurants Near Reed

While Portland is known for many ethnic dining options (the "food carts" in particular), there are many great places to find food near (a short walk or bike ride away) Reed. My personal favorite is the Laughing Planet--they offer a variety of vegan/vegetarian/meat-eater friendly burritos along with other latin american inspired dishes. It is a pretty casual atmosphere and the prices are reasonable. There is also the Delta--I have only been there once, but I hear that any fan of southern cuisine will enjoy this funky restaurant.

The best restaurant in Portland is...

The best restaurant in Portland is without question the superlative Higgins. Excellent clusters of restaurants can be found around NW 23rd and Burnside, and NE 28th. Staccato Gelato, a very good gelateria, is in the latter neighborhood. Worthy choices in SE Portland include Three Doors Down Café, Lauro, Pho Hung, and Thanh Thao. The last two places are very cheap and have wonderful beef noodle soup and pad thai, respectively.

Facts

Did You Know? It's always better to go out if you can, since Portland offers a diverse selection of food opportunities. Additionally, Reed professors often take their students out to restaurants at the end of a semester to celebrate the completion of an academic half-year. At those times, some professors are known to participate in karaoke and other fun activities with students, so think up some crazy ideas and tell your professors.
