I have never had an internship yet since I needed to take summer classes during summer. It is relatively easy to find on though for engineering field because RPI is known for one of the best engineering schools. I am planning to have an internship but it will be hard in America as an international student because most of the companies prefer citizens or green card holders.

Drugs are pretty visible (alcohols are more) at RPI. There are constantly random drug tests on campus during semesters.

Buildings are almost 200 years old, so people prefer newer building even though they are generally further from campus. It is very expensive to live on campus.

Health & Safety:
The city has a high crime rate so there are many public safety cars going around the campus 24/7 for safety. It is very well secured but it is still scary to walk around along at night.

Very dangerous and nothing to do around here. It is going to be a very sad life living here after graduation.

Public buses are free for RPI students with (swiping IDs). Shuttles are generally not on time but they go around pretty often.

It is dangerous but it is cheaper than living on campus. Many people live together to save up the costs.

The campus is on the hill so it is very windy and cold. Summer is nice because it is not that hot but winter is disastrous. There is no 'closed school due to weather' because RPI is a research school and it is not supposed to be closed for research results or lab experiments.

Foods are very bad with almost no options to choose from. Always the same foods are offered.

Parties are very poor. The only good thing for being a girl is that girls can get into any parties without almost any costs. It is hard for guys unless they have connections to frats or sororities.

It is either you buy a school laptop in freshman year and bring your own laptop but there is tons of software (especially of engineers) to download and it takes forever whereas if you get a school laptop, it comes with them. It is required to bring laptops to almost all core engineering classes.

Parking lots are pretty close to the classes and dorms. Permit costs are just average. Cars are somewhat needed because there is nothing to do around campus and quit dangerous off the campus. Malls and restaurants are distant (about 20-25 minutes away from campus) so it is preferred to have cars.

Greeks at RPI are not as amazing as the greeks at other schools. RPI people are nerds, so there is no exception for greeks.

Guys & Girls:
There is certainly a variety of people. There are a few amount of guys that are so into partying, absolutely not care about studying. A large portion of people at RPI is just nerds, very intelligent but lacking social skills. Most of the girls do not seem to care how they look, mostly dressing up very casually (Engineering labs require long pants).

I was not qualified to apply for financial aid since I am an international student. Recently it was a hard time for me and my family financially, so I looked for some opportunities for financial aids but there were no open aids for international whatsoever.

The only popular varsity sports at RPI is hockey. Since it is a big sport, hockey players are offered with great facilities so they could focus more on their sports. Tennis is also the one getting better at its reputation even though the facilities are not as great as hockey's.

Having a laptop is required at RPI, so thankfully they sell a package deal for a laptop that comes with software that will be used by most majors. Printing at RPI can be an annoyance and it isn't too difficult to go over the printing quota if you print anything in color. There is wireless access virtually everywhere on campus, although it is better in some places than in others. Some areas have wifi that isn't as reliable or as fast as in other locations. It's generally reliable, though.

RPI is expensive and the tuition is always going up. There aren't many financial aid opportunities. There's the RPI medal which is awarded in high school and work study. There's not much else in the way of financial aid. Most of the times you'll have to take out loans. The bursars office can also be a pain to deal with if they don't get your payments right on time and put a hold on your account. Unless you're very rich and your parents are going to pay for everything, you'll want to apply for scholarships and try to get work study, if you can.

There are some hidden gems in downtown Troy that are worth checking out. Some places can be more expensive because they are borderline fine dining, but there are plenty of places geared towards the college crowd (Bomber's, Dinosaur BBQ, etc.). Troy also has a unique bakery that is 100% vegan, tastes great, and doesn't burn a whole in the wallet.

The dining halls generally have food that will make you go "meh" after a while. The options can be limited in places like Sage and BARH and in all the dining halls I've gone to, the food gets redundant. A good thing to do is get a plan with lots of flex dollars. These can be used at Father's (an on-campus mini-mart that does have a tendency to overprice things), Ben and Jerry's, and Moe's.

I haven't had an internship yet but I am hoping to get one next Summer in my major.

The workload here is pretty crazy as it is an engineering school. I have to study a lot and have a decent amount of homework daily.
College Freshman 2013-10-16T18:02:02Z
I'm a freshmen so I haven't taken many BME courses yet but they seem pretty interesting so far
College Freshman 2013-10-16T18:00:13Z
hockey is the only division one sport here so it's the one that most people go to. Some of the other sports are overlooked
College Junior 2013-09-09T03:27:08Z
Avoid Commons. Sage is better. Blitman and BAR-H have the best dining but it is a trek if you don't live nearby.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
