Freshmen Required to Live on Campus
Yes
College Prowler Take
Freshmen are, with few exceptions, required to live on campus. Everyone agrees that the nicest dorm is Barton Hall, and there is little room for argument. However, the other freshman dorms on the Hill have all been renovated in the past years, so none are horrible anymore. The quad is more convenient because it is closer to main campus, and BARH is nice because you can stay inside to go to the dining hall. The dorms are expensive, which is why many move off campus after freshman year. The housing on campus is comparable to that at most colleges. Dorms provide excellent opportunities to meet new people and offer social outlets for the residents. Renovations to Freshman Hill and Cary Hall going coed means there is no longer a clear-cut “Worst Dorm On Campus” award winner, so freshmen don’t have to worry about getting stuck in a complete dungeon. Whether you want to live in BARH or the Quad is really a personal preference. The Quad is closer to main campus but is broken up into smaller units and thus is a more isolated environment than the other dorms. BARH is an extra 10-minute walk to main campus compared to the dorms on Freshman Hill, but on cold days having a dining hall just outside your door can be wonderful.

The best dorm is Barton Hall,...
The best dorm is Barton Hall, which is also the newest. Crockett and Cary have been renovated recently. The big one to avoid would be Nason or Hall Hall. For upperclassmen, the quad is closer to the academic buildings, but it’s very small and very tight in there. Stay away from BARH if you can avoid it. |

The BARH dorms are far, but it ends up generating a very close-knit atmosphere between the students who live there. |

I’d say stay away from Stackwyck...
I’d say stay away from Stackwyck and BARH because they are too far away from the main part of campus. Barton Hall is new and seems like a fancy hotel. That has to be the nicest dorm I’ve ever seen by a long shot. Quad is in the middle of campus but farther away from the majority of freshmen. All the other dorms are about the same. They seem to be fairly large compared to a few other schools I’ve visited, but I’ve seen at least one other school with bigger dorms. |

Avoid quad—it sucks. Try to get Crockett or Nason or Hall. I’d go Crockett. Barton is nice, but it’s kind of anti-social—lots of early-decision, anti-social people get in there. The more sociable crowds are in Crockett and Nason. |
