College Prowler Take

The network is fast, and there are plenty of places to plug your laptop in—including a wireless network in some buildings on campus. Rensselaer has a reputation of being one of the most “wired” campuses in the country, and it is a reputation well earned. The high-speed network provides instant access to the Web and also to the RPI server, both of which are invaluable tools for students.

Some classes will require a lot of online coursework, while in others, you won’t touch your computer at all. One thing to remember is to check your e-mail regularly, though. The majority of outside communication between students, professors, and TAs occurs through e-mail, and if you miss an important one, you could miss a deadline or schedule change. It’s a lot easier than going to a professor’s office, though, so take advantage. The laptop requirement—though it can be cumbersome, awkward, and expensive at first—is really a great tool for students. Using computers to your advantage becomes second nature before Thanksgiving break of your freshman year.

The computer network is great, labs aren’t usually crowded because it is campus policy that everyone has a laptop (you can buy one at the school at an outrageously-expensive price, or come with your own). If you cannot afford one, they will provide one to you either via lease or provide you with one via your financial-aid package.

There are computers all over the campus. There are some in the library, by the mailroom, the HAWC, and the computer lab. They are not always crowded. If they are, it is only temporary. I recommend that you bring your own computer and printer. Mainly because you can stay up as long as you need to finish your paper (because the library closes around midnight), and you have access to a printer at all hours of the night.

They require a laptop at RPI. You can buy/lease one through them with IBM (excellent deal, sweet machine for a great deal, but still expensive), or bring your own if you want something extra special or a Mac. There are plenty of computer labs on campus, as well (PC or Mac, even some Linux/Unix stations), either great desktops, or just hook-ups for your laptop.

You can hook up your laptop anywhere, and you need it for most of your classes—a lot of times in class you take your quizzes online or use the computers for labs. I love my laptop that I bought through the school, and you can even lease one.

The network at RPI is actually very good—there are computer labs everywhere on campus; it’s just hard trying to figure out which ones are open at what times. The Voorhees Computing Center (VCC) is open 24 hours a day and seven days a week—which is really convenient.

Charged to Print?

Yes - Students receive $12.50 toward black and white printing each semester. Charge per page varies by type of printer (anywhere from 8 cents for one-sided black and white to $1 for a transparancy).

Did You Know?

With over 9,000 Ethernet ports on campus, the ports outnumber the students, so no one will ever have a problem hooking up their laptop.
