Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In general, students find Troy to be a boring and dangerous place where it is hard to have fun. If you are from a big city where there is always something going on, you will definitely be disappointed by the atmosphere in Troy. Albany, Saratoga, and Grafton Lake are all good get-away spots if you have a car.

Troy may not be the nicest place to live, but to its credit, it is a very old city with a lot of history. However, since RPI wants its students to stay on campus, if you are into history and want to find out any interesting facts and tidbits about the city, you have to do it on your own. As far as entertainment options, there are a few decent golf courses in the area at reasonable prices, not to mention plenty of hills to go hiking, and creeks if you feel like cliff jumping on a hot afternoon. RPI will tell you that you should never go downtown—and while it can be scary at night, as long as you don’t wander off by yourself and stick with a few friends while walking the streets, you should be okay. Distractions are welcome to RPI students to break the monotony of studying; whenever you have a chance to do something different, you should.

Troy - Differen Shades of Gray

RPI , the nations oldest technical institution is located in Troy, a worn down industrial city of upstate New York. It is like the lone star of the city, though Troy is really not a college town. Historically an industrial town and once the seat of the American textile industry, it is now nothing more than a worn down industrial town.

Like most cities of its kind, Troy has its share of safety issues stemming from the low average income of the residents and also because of the design of the city, which allows for many sketchy areas. The local residents are fondly termed as 'Troylets' by the Rensselaer community and are not the nicest bunch of people to have as neighbors. The city is in general so unsafe that students are discouraged to walk around alone off campus, after nightfall. There are some cases of burglary and mugging even in the areas surrounding the campus. The general size of the city is pretty small and there is not much to do except ice skating and playing collegiate sports. The locals are also not very fond of RPI or its students mainly because they hardly contribute towards the economy of the city. There is a regular farmers market in the downtown area, every week and a monthly event called 'Troy night out', where stores are open till late.

However, Troy has its up sides as well . The closeness to Albany (the State Capital of New York) , means that there is at least one decently big city that one can go to if he or she gets really bored of the small town atmosphere. It also has a few really nice restaurants including a Barbecue place called Dinosaur Bar-b-q (whose portions are as large as the name suggests). The city also lacks nice places for shopping or groceries but there are Walmart's and Price Chopper's in the adjacent cities which are a 5 minute drive away from campus. There are some small stores inside the RPI campus as well.

Although the downtown area of Troy is called the 'historic downtown', there really isn't much to see either in downtown or the city in general. Most of the tourist attractions of the city are located inside RPI. One of them is a truly spectacular arc shaped building called the EMPAC (Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center), which houses the most acoustically perfect auditorium in the state. The city also is the birthplace of the iconic uncle Sam and has the nations oldest private women's high school. Surrounding Albany however offers a lot more things to see including some museums. Being a city in upstate New York also means that the suburban areas around the city are exquisitely beautiful. Not only are there some wonderful lakes for (for activities like fishing) in nearby Saratoga but the Adirondak Mountains are quite close by and have plenty of peaks which can be hiked. As an added bonus to students, the Institute is located on top of a hill and so the view of the city from the Library is spectacular at nights.

In the end, Troy is a city which some people like while most don't. A lot of people find the serene and peaceful nature of the city, very helpful for their education but its definitely not a city where a tourist should go to. The people who live here , live out of necessity or because they wanted to get a good engineering education from a very reputed institute. However, if one can make this city their home, they would probably get used to it and may even find it nice at some point.

A Burned Out City

Troy, NY is by no means the most vibrant and diverse city for a college student. Touted as the "Home of Uncle Sam," Troy is barely fueled by its constant overcast and weary residents. The restaurants in the region offer a decent quality and variety of cuisine. Attractions are limited to dining, bowling, and riverfront walks. Although the city of Albany is a 10 mile drive away, the lack of efficient public transport sets an unfortunate limit on travel.

Small Town Atmosphere

Troy is a satellite city near Albany, but seems like another world. Small town atmosphere, great little shops. RPI students organize weekly events in town, so you really get to know the area and the residents - you feel like part of a community. Albany is 20 minutes away, and other schools like Siena, Russel Sage, and SUNY-Albany are close if you have a car.

5 Fun Facts about Troy:

Several movies have been filmed in downtown Troy’s historical district, including The Bostonians (1983), Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence (1993), and H.G.Wells The Time Machine (2002).

Clemet C. Moore’s Night Before Christmas was first published in The Troy Sentinel on December 23, 1823 under the title A Visit from St. Nicholas.

In the late 19th century, Troy had a professional baseball team known as the Troy Trojans, and on September 22, 1881, they set the all-time record low for attendance at a major league game—12. The record still stands.

In 1864, an Irish immigrant named Kate Mullany formed the Collar Laundry Union, the first women’s union in the history of the United States. In 1998, Hillary Clinton gave a speech at the Mullany home, located on Eighth Street.

Troy is known as the “Collar City” because Hannah Montague cut the collars off her husband’s shirts so that she would not have to repeatedly wash the entire shirt simply to get the collar clean. This gave rise to an entire collar industry, and is where the term “white collar” originated. One of the bridges that takes you across the Hudson in Troy is called the Collar City Bridge.
