Parking Permits

Any close parking goes to the faculty and upperclassmen that live on campus. Freshmen cannot get parking permits, and students who live off campus have two options: either they have to pay for a permit to park at the Field House and take a shuttle to main campus, or they can try to find a spot on the street.

College Prowler Take

Students find it difficult to park on campus. Freshmen aren’t allowed parking permits for campus lots, and street space around Troy is scarce. Those who live off campus and commute say that you need to allow a lot of extra time for finding parking. The few student-accessible lots are small, with the exception of the Field House lots—and from these, you have to take a bus to main campus.

If you’re a freshman, don’t bring a car. The University technically doesn’t allow you to, anyway, and it’s just not worth the hassle. Upperclassmen can get campus parking permits, but keep in mind that RPI oversells these, so there are no guaranteed spots. If you live off campus as an upperclassman, try to find a place within walking distance—commuter parking is absolutely horrid. And if you do bring a car, be forewarned: Troy has hills like Rome and stoplights on every corner; it can cut your car’s gas mileage in half.

Parking is tough right now, and there isn’t enough room for freshmen to have cars. Fortunately, having a car is more of a convenience than a necessity, so you might want to think about leaving it at home.

Freshmen are not allowed to bring cars to school. You could find a place on the street if you needed to, but I don’t think they will sell you a parking sticker. (We have an infamous parking safety person. You can’t get away with anything really.)
