College Prowler Take
RPI’s campus itself is very safe. There are phones with emergency buttons located throughout campus, and plenty of Public Safety officers on patrol at any given time. If you do feel uneasy about getting somewhere, the escort service is always available. As for the rest of Troy, however, it can be scary after dark, and it is not advisable to walk around off campus alone. If you leave things lying around for too long, such as a laptop or books, they may not be there when you come back. This is probably the biggest security risk, but at least it’s avoidable. Keep your stuff within eyesight if you are in a public place, or leave it with a friend if you are going to be gone for an extended period of time. Also remember to lock your doors every time you leave—no matter how secure the dorms may seem, you can’t be too careful. If you stay on campus, you shouldn’t have a problem taking care of yourself. Downtown Troy can be frightening, and for good reason. If you walk around by yourself after dark, you can find trouble—especially if you are female. Stick with friends when walking the streets, and you shouldn’t have any problems. Overall, though, Troy itself could present a real threat if you were under the wrong conditions, yet there isn’t too much to worry about at RPI.

Safety seems to be pretty typical...
Safety seems to be pretty typical of a modern day campus with those blue emergency posts all over the place. The Department of Public Safety always seems to be on patrol; I never felt insecure walking around campus no matter the time of day (or night). They also provide an escort if you are heading out alone at night where they will take you to your destination without worries. |

I have found campus to be really safe. Troy is not the safest city, but I have never known anyone to have problems on campus (campus is out of downtown by a good few miles). As a female, I have always felt comfortable walking around at night on my way home from friends’ houses and parties. Even downtown Troy is not really that bad. (I personally just think it has a bad reputation.) I go out and feel safe. |

First off, the RPI campus is pretty nice and fairly safe, too. However, the town of Troy isn’t quite as nice or that safe in certain areas. That’s not to say that Troy is a bad place; there are some nice parts of Troy. |

Campus Safety is more concerned...
Campus Safety is more concerned with giving people parking tickets then they are with the blue-light at the emergency booth notifying them of a problem for hours and hours. And just because everyone has a laptop, it doesn’t mean someone will be any less hesitant to take your stuff or anything else of yours that may be lying around. |

Safety is pretty good; there are...
Safety is pretty good; there are no outstanding on-campus incidents I can think of. Of course, people get their rooms broken into once in a while, but 99 percent of the time, the door or window is wide open, and no one was around. That sort of thing happens, but I’m sure that happens everywhere. |
