Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students will always, always complain about school food because anyone eating the same thing every day for every meal is bound to get sick of it. However, if you ask freshmen in the first month of school, they’ll tell you how great the food is. It’s diverse, there are usually vegetarian options and vegan options, it’s accessible, it’s tasty, and it’s healthy. Many of the cooks are Johnson & Wales graduates or interns, so there is a certain culinary flair to most dishes. Also, to give some perspective, the Met, which is the main dining center, caters most school functions, so the administration must think the food is good. Most of the food in the Met is sold by weight, so you get what you pay for, and you’re not charged for a “meal” if you just want to come in and get an apple and a drink. Except for Carr Haus, the food is fairly expensive for kids who are not on the meal plan, but if you are, it will give you enough points to eat comfortably. The Met also takes special care in trying to accommodate the foods that students may miss from home. There is always a suggestion box so that students may make requests or submit recipes.

There are four meal-plan options. Freshmen are required to purchase the largest plan, which is good and bad. No one wants to run out of money for food; however, most kids can’t eat enough to use their points, and the school only gives back a small percentage of what’s left if it’s more than $100. Many kids who have extra money end up paying for their few friends who have run out, and there are plenty of creative ways to use points. Sometimes, students bring in baked goods for the last day of classes as a celebration, and some give food to shelters.

RISD Dining

In one word- Yummalicious. RISD has and continues to serve a variety of high quality meals, there is something for everyone. Ranging from vegan, vegetarian, Asian, Mexican, and good old fashioned American fast food, RISD offers a wide range of choices. The MET located within the freshman quad area, is a buffet style cafeteria that is both convenient and tasty. There is the Portfolio Cafe located within 15 West famous for its Do-it-yourself Moobella ice cream machine with flavors ranging from low-fat pistachio for the weight conscious to rich and creamy white chocolate raspberry. If you are looking for a quick bite, you can stop by the Watermark cafe which offers freshly brewed coffee, sandwiches and desserts. And last but not least, students enrolled under the RISD point plan can purchase personalized sandwiches from Jolly Roger cafe located past the ID building. All in all, RISD catering won't let your tastebuds down.

There is a variety in the food they serve. The cafeterias sometimes have specific food for specific days, such as Mardi Gras.
