Freshmen Required to Live on Campus

Yes - Freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus.

College Prowler Take

It’s true, you can’t avoid dorm life if you come to RISD as a freshman. However, there are some definite pluses to living in the Quad. You are right by food and studios, and there are always people around and awake to hang out with. Some of the dorms are suites, so you’re not sharing a bathroom with an entire floor, and all the rooms are big enough to be comfortable. If you’re not so lucky as to get a suite, the communal bathroom is only for a year. Once you’re out of the freshman dorms, life gets better. Almost all of the dorms on campus are full of character and have a nice atmosphere and space to them. They are fairly small, so you get to know your house and remain plugged into what’s going on around campus without being smothered by it. If you stick it out a year or so in outer housing, then you will build up enough points to get yourself into Colonial Apartments, which is basically just as good as living off campus, only slightly less homey. Colonial is the goal of every student living on campus because you get your own bedroom, and there is a bathroom and kitchen for every apartment.

Students who want to live in doubles or triples have an advantage because if one roommate gets a better lottery number, the best number of the group rules. For example, if one student has lived on campus for two years, and another has only lived on campus for one, when the two-year student is called, she brings the one-year student in, they pick out their room together based on the floor plans, and both sign contracts in order to secure their space. If you are not present at the lottery, you will not be given a space, and there is no way to reserve a space.

Compared to other colleges, RISD has good housing, even for freshmen. To RISD students, the Quad seems horrible, but just for one year. After freshman year, the housing on campus is almost luxurious.

Dorms are dorms. If you want to live in the lap of luxury, move off campus. It’s hard enough to get housing as it is. They are average. Not so new, but they function fine. They were all pretty equal for the first year.

The dorms were okay. I lived in Homer two, and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The only problem I had my freshmen year was the bathroom overflowed while I flushed it and dirty water spilled all over the place. That was an awful experience I will never forget. I think South has the nicest place since they have air-conditioning and individual suites with individual bathrooms. I hung out in South four when I was a freshman. One thing I hated about freshman dorms are the mice running around. They ate my Ramen noodles once and spat the Styrofoam pieces out and left their feces all over the place. I hated those nasty mice running around.

Being in the dorms is important...

Being in the dorms is important because you meet so many people. I lived in school housing for three years and made a lot of friends and stayed connected to what was going on because of that. Dexter House and Colonial Apartments are great. I’ve gone through Farnum House, and it scared me.
