College Prowler Take
When it comes to the facility that students care about most—studio space—it’s on a department-by-department basis, but on the whole, people’s needs are met one way or another and most everyone has what they need to function. In terms of athletic facilities, Brown makes up for what RISD lacks. The communal computer labs satisfy anyone who doesn’t need extremely specific programs, and even then, certain majors have their own labs to fulfill those needs. The equipment that RISD students are privileged to have access to during their college experience is impressive. For example, there are approximately six woodshops on campus that grant access to different groups of students, and the textiles department has one of two college-owned Jacquard looms in the country. Aside from these kinds of departmental resources, RISD’s greatest resource is its museum. Admission is free to all RISD students, and there are special events, as well as the annual showing of work from graduate students and the winners of the contest “Sightings.” The best part about the museum is that if you make an appointment far enough in advance, you can meet with a curator or assistant, and they will pull almost any part of the collection for you to see in person. Considering that at any current time, only 4 percent of the collection is on display, RISD students are given access to a tremendous resource that is not afforded anyone else.

I’ve been really impressed with my department. My class doubled the size of the previous class, and they’ve found a way to accommodate us at every turn. It’s been tight in some cases—the CAD lab is the worst—but we’ve managed. |

Athletics and computers are good. The dining is pretty good. The studios depend on the department. I don’t have my own photo lab, so that’s too bad. |

It depends on your major—my studios are unbelievable. They put a million resources at your fingertips. And the atmosphere is great for working. I haven’t really heard people that upset about communal studios; it’s more a fight for personal studio space. Some majors get more than others, and not until a certain year, if at all. |
