Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Even though Providence is a city, most students feel safe while they’re on campus and the immediate surrounding areas. The blue-light emergency phones, Public Safety officers’ patrols, strict building access, and the RISD Rides system keep the feeling of on-campus safety high. The RISD Rides shuttle service runs from the 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., and it will take students from a residence to campus or campus to residence. Students who live on campus may catch the shuttle during its regular stops along a fixed route, and students living off campus may call for a specific pickup and will be reached within 15 minutes. While it is still being improved and refined, RISD Rides is not completely satisfactory. There is a route that the shuttle adheres to which circumnavigates the area in which most students live, but there are students who live outside of this area who have been left out of the loop.

While most students feel safe on campus, they also have had some conflict with the officers who carry out this objective. It is to be expected that such figures of authority may rub students the wrong way from time to time. Often, these run-ins have to do with officers who are trying to close studio buildings while students are trying to stay and finish their work. However, representatives of Public Safety often communicate with student groups to find out how they may better protect the student community. A policy in which individual Public Safety officers are assigned to each student house is an effort not to police students, but to increase communication and improve relations.

Public safety does a really good job of making the campus feel safe. You can call them at any time and they will get to you immediately. This should be common sense, but be sure you call pub safe, not 911. The providence police have a ton of serious crime on their hands and they won't be able to get to you right away if you're sleep deprived and accidentally slice your finger off with an exacto. It's easy to forget that Providence is a regular city with a fair share of crime, so they send out regular safety advisory emails that alert students of different crimes committed around campus. If you travel in groups of at least three or four at night and stay out of bad areas, you will be totally fine.

We also have RISD rides, which is a shuttle service that takes students to and from dorms and studios. They're technically only supposed to go to and from RISD buildings and only drive you to direct locations until midnight (after that the vans go between bus stops around campus) but the drivers are awesome and genuinely care about student safety so they'll usually make exceptions.

RISD is extremely (and pretty excessively) strict about drug and alcohol use in campus housing, but Res Life is responsible for that bullsh*t. In general, public safety officers just want to make sure you're ok if you drink too much and need to go to the hospital. If you're nice to them, they'll be nice to you. Res Life will bust your ass every time and they're NEVER nice about it. I can only speak for freshman housing in the quad though, Reslife is supposedly more lenient in upperclassmen housing.

School Health serviced are pretty basic. They could really try to do walk ins since the school gives us such busy schedules.

Security is not bad even though it is pretty spread out. The school has a great "RISD RIDES" shuttle service from 7pm to 330am. Pretty helpful and makes being in studio late helpful

Very Safe

Rhode Island School of Design's campus security is run by Public Safety. They have emergency call stations spread throughout campus and also monitor the campus personally. I have never felt unsafe on campus.
