College Prowler Take
Most RISD kids go to parties instead of clubs and bars. Parties at RISD are in fairly small off-campus apartments and usually involve a minimal amount of alcohol and a lot of dancing and dressing up. Because RISD is small, most kids know everyone else or have at least seen one another around, and you will rarely end up at a party where you don’t know anyone at all. Most parties only take place on Friday and Saturday nights, and many students only have time to go to one party a week. On a Friday, kids will start getting together around 9 p.m. and may hang out until four or so in the morning, but by midday Saturday, everyone is back in studio working. Most RISD parties are a lot of fun because when students do finally decide to take a break and cut loose, they do it in a big way. There are often theme parties such as “Cat and Mouse,” “Playboy Party,” “Black and White,” and “Vintage Dinner Party.” If kids are going out to have fun, '80s night is a favorite. In case you couldn’t guess why, it’s because they can get out their sweatbands and dress up. The school parties are also pretty awesome—there is lots of dancing, lots of drinking, and lots of fun. Another great part about the nightlife in Providence is that there are things for students under 21. There are a bunch of coffeehouses to hang out in, and most clubs let in people under 21 as long as they don’t drink. Most people don’t have a lot of time to party at night, but when they do, there is always something going on, and the experience is always memorable.

It’s nice because you don’t have to drink to have fun at parties here. It’s more about dancing and talking and stuff. There really aren’t any parties on campus. It’s pretty much not allowed, so everything is more comfortable because it’s in people’s apartments. |

There aren’t many parties on campus. Off campus, there are a number of bars and clubs ranging from ‘80s flashbacks (club Hell) to techno to a relaxing drink in a calm atmosphere, like The Wild Colonial. |

Parties at RISD are usually pretty small. Probably not more than 30 kids at the biggest. There’s a lot of drinking and a lot of music and talking and laughing. I rarely end up at a party where I don’t know at least two- thirds of the kids there. |

I haven’t been to too many parties, but they seem to be pretty average. |

The parties are good. We stay away from the clubs, because they’re filled with Johnson & Wales frat and sorority kids. |
FactsClub Crawler
The local clubs are fairly standard, except for Club Hell, which is anything but ordinary. Hell almost always has a theme, and the theme is usually amusing. Most clubs don’t have a cover charge, or if they do, it’s very minimal, and many clubs will let you in if you’re 18 and up.
Bar Prowler
There are a few bars around Providence that actually have very nice atmosphere. Many of these are a little more like European pubs and less like American dives. The nicest is the Custom House Tavern. One thing to keep in mind: if you want a cheap drink, buy yourself some beer at a liquor store. Most places charge $4+ for a shot or mixed drink. Another thing to keep in mind: many liquor stores in Massachusetts, and some in Rhode Island, are open on Sundays.
Organization Parties
Many organizations of the RISD community organize parties, such as the Korean Student Association and the Asian Cultural Association, but don't serve alcohol. The RISD Office of Student Life organizes large-scale dance parties such as Artist Ball in the fall semester or Electro-flo.

What to Do if You're Not 21
Many parties (especially at Brown) serve drinks to all college students. Admissions to parties, clubs, and bars usually don’t have restrictions. Otherwise, underage students tend to stay in dorms and hang out, go to local cafés and restaurants, watch movies, go to gigs and shows, or travel.
