Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you talk to Rhodes upperclassmen about their college experience, most will say that they're glad they chose their school. When it comes down to it, Rhodes pairs a phenomenal educational experience with a down-to-earth, welcoming atmosphere that alums fondly reflect on. The professors care more than you can possibly imagine. They have high expectations and do their best to challenge students, but they are also there to be mentors or even friends. Students are encouraged to explore their interests, discover passions, and fight to reach their full potential. Students who are unhappy at Rhodes tend to feel suffocated with how small the school actually is. It can be difficult to find a niche, and sometimes it's frustrating seeing the same people everywhere you go. The workload isn't exactly easy, either. Before enrolling, you have to be sure you're looking for such a small environment. There are definitely pros to it—the teacher/student relations, small class sizes, personal attention, a "community" feeling. But the students who are unhappy are typically the ones who realize they belong at a much larger place.

Students who remain at Rhodes say that, even if they were initially dissatisfied, they are so glad they stayed. At the very least, they know that they're graduating with a solid education and the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the "real world," whether that means going straight into the workforce, beginning graduate school, living abroad, or anything else a fully-equipped Rhodes grad could possibly want to do. Rhodes is a great community, and any driven, passionate student would be lucky to be a part of it.

Parking, a Plus

Rhodes shines when it comes to parking your car. You do not have to worry about your car being damaged or stolen on this campus. The entire campus is gated and under surveillance with campus safety officers patrolling the campus at all times. There are plenty of places to park if you're a resident. Freshmen are confined to one lot, which works well because it keeps most of the other lots clear. Parking gets a little tight during the daytime, but if you live on campus and use your car very little, it's not such a terrible problem.

Diversity

The diversity at Rhodes College is just about what you would accept it to be. Sure, there are a number of different ethnicities on campus, but for the most part, it's upper class white kids. Nothing against the college, but the cost alone scares a lot of people away. However, being a lower middle class white student, I was actually attracted to the school because of the fact that for a one of the best southern, private liberal arts colleges, Rhodes wasn't made up entirely of rich kids and that appealed to me very much.

Campus Life

The dorms at Rhodes College are very comfortable and spacious. Each dorm has at least one stained glass window that opens to catch a breeze. There are sinks in most rooms and kitchens in some quads. Laundry is free to students living on campus and so is wifi on the entire campus. The food is pretty average compared to other schools, although two cafeteria choices is nice for a small school like this. My only concerns are that the school is trying to cram as many people as possible into the current buildings. They want to increase the number of students on campus, which means that more and more common rooms are disappearing and being converted into more dorm rooms. They are almost finished building a large three story residence hall, which should take some of the stress of the rest of the buildings. I do enjoy the fact that upperclassmen get first choice on living arrangements for the upcoming year.
