The older you are the better on campus housing gets.

There are is always a lot to do off campus.

There is a lot of unspoken pressure to drink.

We have a diversity code that all students sign.

The library is huge, and popular to study in.

I love being apart of the greek life. There are some stigmas that go along with each sorority and frat, but they're all great. You can get away with not being in the system, but I wouldn't recommend it. I love how the sororities really accept you based on who you are and not recommendations.

I love being able to leave my computer and not worry about it. I love being able to walk home after parties. I love, love, love the new housing (West Village) and would kill to live there. The campus is absolutely gorgeous. The greek system is nice and not out of control, but definitely taken seriously.

There are four seasons here and summer was pretty nice and sunny, but not ridiculously hot. Fall is gorgeous on campus with all of the trees. I've heard it snows like once or twice a year and it's never too much. Overall, the weather is very tolerable.

My roommate is Indian, so I see a lot of her friends a lot, but otherwise theres not an extreme amount of diversity. I have a lot of super rich friends and some friends that aren't poor by any means, but not near the same level as my rich friends. Most people are Christian and I haven't run into too many gay people.
College Freshman 2013-11-05T02:44:59Z
Frat parties off campus are great because there are constantly pledges chauffeuring people around. It's easy for me to get alcohol at frat houses and when boys buy me drinks. I have a fake, but I haven't used it yet. I always have friends that can buy alcohol for me. Currently, I have been participating in a lot of sorority centered parties and those are all pretty great.

There really isn't much school spirit. I didn't even go to the football game on homecoming. The facilities look great from what I can tell, but I don't play a sport. There are a lot of freshman who are playing football this year (1 in 3 boys plays football), so we are definitely an up and coming team.

Being in Memphis, there are a lot of fun barbecue places. I've only ever used my student discount at Yolo (frozen yogurt place), but I think there are a few other places that accept Rhodes cards. Cafe Eclectic really is great. It's nice to be able to walk to a place with really good, high quality food. My favorite restaurant so far is Flight, but it's definitely not a place I would go to unless my parents were in town.

Everyone has an internship at some point and Rhodes is really helpful when it comes to finding one. St. Jude's, FedEx, and the Memphis Zoo are all nearby. I think the art rooms are pretty average, but I heard they have plans to renovate them soon. The art teachers are all really great.

The registration process is slightly confusing, but it is a fair system. All of my professors are great. They really are easy to meet with. There are a lot of requirements to fill since it's a liberal arts school. I can't say that I particularly enjoy taking Search (the study of different religions and a requirement for all Freshman), but I understand why they are making us take it. You can also take Life instead of Search. Life is all on the bible. I have a lot of work and I have difficulties setting priorities between going out and staying in and studying. I usually study in my room so I can stay focused, but I have studied in the library before and it's great too.

I personally don't have a house, but a lot of the houses I have been to are super nice. They are in friendly neighborhoods with families (some of them like to call the cops...).
College Freshman 2013-11-05T02:32:11Z
The library is obviously gorgeous and there are plenty of spaces to study there. The Middle Ground is connected to the library and there is mini Starbucks there, which is nice. It's annoying that you have to pay 10 cents for every piece of paper I print. The gym is pretty lousy. It smells bad and there are like 8 treadmills and usually only 3 of them are working properly.
College Freshman 2013-11-05T02:27:33Z
At Rhodes, freshmen are allowed to have cars. I personally don't have one, but I usually find a friend to drive me around. Next year I plan on bringing one to campus. I haven't heard anything about ticketing. I signed up for the ZipCar program they kept advertising and it was pretty bad. It is fairly expensive and there is a volume limit on the stereo, which is annoying.
College Freshman 2013-11-05T02:25:06Z
The campus is so safe, but I have heard to be very cautious when walking off campus at night. The Memphis Zoo is across the street. I haven't been yet, but on Tuesdays students can go for free. There is like one good restaurant you can walk to, but otherwise you need a car. They have a crappy mall nearby, but if you want stores like J Crew or Free People you have to drive 25 minutes away. When my parents come to town there are some really good restaurants and there are some classics for college students (Central Barbecue, Huey's, Cafe Eclectic, Frida's).

Health & Safety:
I have worked with campus security a couple times. I thought my backpack was stolen (which would have been very unusual, because theft is very uncommon at Rhodes) and they let me go through the video tapes with them. I had one to take me to a party off campus one time. They're always patrolling the campus, but they it's uncommon for them to break up frat parties.

I love living in my dorm. I live in this crazy dorm called Wiliford that is basically a maze, so the RA never visits. The showers kind of suck. There are four showers that are made for a midget and two decent ones. There is also an issue with internet around like 12-1 (I'm not sure why, but that's just what I've noticed). The dorms are fairly spacious and I don't have any bug issues or anything like that. It's nice that there is a temperature control thing in everyone's room. However, once they switch from air conditioning to heat there is no going back until spring. They jumped the gun a little bit this year too, so that has been a hassle.
College Freshman 2013-11-05T02:15:41Z
I applied for an art fellowship, but because of my grades I was not able to receive it (they qualified me for another scholarship that was worth more money). But they were so impressed, they gave me an extra 2,000$ scholarship. They really worked to show their interest in me.

Internships are relatively easy to come by. Some of them are paid, and some not. As long as the student puts forth some effort, he or she will easily find an internship. Professors are really good about telling their students about interviews.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
