Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Rhodes is a school that's not very sports-oriented. No one really knows exactly why that is. Maybe it's because it's Division III, or maybe everyone gets too hyped up about SEC (Southeastern Conference) football teams to focus any excess energy on Rhodes' team. Either way, varsity sports are mainly only important to the people who play them or to those with friends on the team. Some students will make it out to a few games each year, but usually the stands are pretty bare. It's unfortunate for the players, especially since Rhodes does in fact have some great teams, but that's just how it is.

Intramurals and club sports are much more popular. That could be because they're a good balance for students who are unable or unwilling to try to deal with varsity athletics with a full, intensive course load. Ultimate Frisbee, soccer, basketball, and even Quidditch have big followings, and students love getting involved to take a break from working and to meet new people. Intramurals are the way to go if the lack of real sports drama is killing you. You could drive to Ole Miss (University of Mississippi) an hour and a half away to see a real SEC game, but if that's too much effort, you're out of luck. Technically, Sewanee is the school rival, but few people are even aware of that, let alone care enough to get truly competitive. Rhodes Activities Board (RAB) has started creating events to try to bring students into the stands and make everyone more involved, and it is working a little bit. You can also try to create school spirit on your own by putting on the red and black, and getting out into the stands, but you might have some trouble trying to drag your friends out with you. It's sad that the sports teams don't get enough credit because they do produce wins, and they’re a great thing to be a part of. You don't need to be recruited to get involved—one of the pros to being Division III!

The Tradeoff of Hard Academics and Small Athletics

Rhodes Athletics are only Division III, so we are definitely lacking in program size and in school spirit. All of our athletes are also serious students, and even though I'm not an athlete, I do have a few athlete friends who have quit because it's a lot of work being a student and an athlete at home. We do have a few football tailgates in the fall, and those are the best days because Rhodes feels like a big school for a day. Overall, Rhodes Athletics are what you make of them.

School Spirit?

Our sports teams are solid. Not the best, but they usually do well. No, we aren't a giant state school, so obviously we don't have the football team of a state school. But Rhodes tries. The problem is the lack of school spirit and support for the sports teams. Few people attend the games. However, we do have nice facilities. Nice enough, anyway. There's usually not a wait for the exercise machines or anything like that.

No Fans

A high portion of students participate in athletics, but the school spirit for athletics is incredibly low compared to a state school.

Most Popular Sports

On the varsity level, basketball, football, and soccer are most popular. There's also a lot of interest and competition with intramural and club sports such as basketball, soccer, volleyball, and even Quidditch!

Most Overlooked Teams

Most Rhodes teams are overlooked, which is sad because a lot of them have earned some great accomplishments recently.

School Spirit

Attending sporting events really isn't a pastime of the average Rhodes student. Because of this, it's easy to assume that there's no school spirit, but that's not entirely the case. While students don't always fill the bleachers and rush the field during games, they're still proud to be part of the Rhodes community. The "Honk If You Love Rhodes" sign waves proudly during orientation days, and alumni are constantly coming back for campus events. A current student could talk for hours about his or her professors, classes, beautiful campus, and all the opportunities Rhodes offers. And on your way out of campus, check the parking lot for all of the Rhodes bumper stickers!

Getting Tickets

Rhodes sporting events don't require tickets. In fact, oftentimes groups like the Rhodes Activities Board (RAB) have to create events with prizes to even get people to come to the games at all.

Best Place to Take a Walk

If you want to stay on campus, there isn't a bad place to take a walk! The grounds are gorgeous, and Oak Alley and Fisher Garden are especially nice to walk through on a sunny day. Overton Park is your best option if you want to go past the campus gates. Just make sure you go during the day and preferably with a buddy!
