Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The majority of Rhodes students is fairly pleased with on-campus housing. For one, the housing department usually does an incredible job of pairing up freshman roommates. Many even choose to live together again the following year. There also doesn't seem to be a necessarily "bad" dorm to live in. For example, some say Glassell Hall is an absolutely miserable place in which to live, while others rave about its sense of community and the great freshman memories created there. Luckily, if you do find your dorm less than ideal, you can walk two minutes to the next dorm and hang out there. The close distance between the dorms and the rest of the buildings on campus, plus the desire to remain in the loop regarding campus events and activities, cause many students to want to live on campus all four years. It is also much safer—dorm buildings can only be accessed with a FOB key (all students get one at the beginning of freshman year), and many students even feel comfortable enough to leave their dorm room doors unlocked throughout the day.

Recently, as Rhodes has started to expand, there has been an issue involving space. Students are being encouraged to move off campus to make room for the ever-rising number of incoming freshmen. Freshmen and sophomores are guaranteed housing, so you'll have a couple of years before you start to feel real pressure; however, thankfully, new construction plans have been made, so the space issue could be completely resolved very soon. This is a definite plus because staying on campus helps students get more involved in the social scene and the community of the school. Plus, who doesn't like to wake up five minutes before class starts and still make it on time?

Satisfactory Experience

I had the luck of having a private bathroom in my dorm all 4 years. East Village is hands down the nicest dorm with apartment style housing. It is also the most expensive, however. The downside to living on campus is you must have a meal plan, even if minimal. EV has a kitchen so it was useless for me to have to be on meal plan, but I still was able to make use of it occassionally by purchasing staples such as bananas and oranges. It is extremely convenient to live on campus so you can go back to your room in between classes, for a quick bite, to change clothes, etc.

Campus Life

The dorms at Rhodes College are very comfortable and spacious. Each dorm has at least one stained glass window that opens to catch a breeze. There are sinks in most rooms and kitchens in some quads. Laundry is free to students living on campus and so is wifi on the entire campus. The food is pretty average compared to other schools, although two cafeteria choices is nice for a small school like this. My only concerns are that the school is trying to cram as many people as possible into the current buildings. They want to increase the number of students on campus, which means that more and more common rooms are disappearing and being converted into more dorm rooms. They are almost finished building a large three story residence hall, which should take some of the stress of the rest of the buildings. I do enjoy the fact that upperclassmen get first choice on living arrangements for the upcoming year.

Above Average Housing

The dorms at Rhodes are generally pretty great. The college offers co-ed, single gender, substance free, and themed housing. In general, all the rooms are spacious and have fairly nice amenities. Maintenance is really great about making sure rooms are up to student standards. The only downside to campus housing is that due to an influx of students, many of the common rooms have been converted into rooms, forcing students to congregate in their rooms.

Did You Know? The conservatory is located in the Trezevant-Townsend-Voorhies quadrangle. It's a large social room with big sofas, tables, a fireplace, TV, kitchen, bathroom, and an outdoor patio. It's a great place to relax, study, or meet up with friends.
