College Prowler Take
Rhodes has a better server than most, and the ITS support staff is unparalleled. Many classes incorporate the use of Moodle, where professors post grades, assignments, quizzes, and announcements for their students. Campus e-mail is also very important and should be checked several times a day for class news, virus prevention updates, and party information. The computer labs on campus are great for some quiet study time, and they also have spacious work areas. Labs can get crowded during midterms and finals, but otherwise you’ll never have to wait for a computer to open up. Though the library closes at 2 a.m. on weeknights, the Middle Ground stays open 24 hours with access to computers, printers, and vending machines for the all-nighter munchies.
Although having your own computer isn’t a necessity at Rhodes, it’s advised that you do simply for convenience. Also, with the expansion of the wireless Ethernet, if you don’t have any money issues, your best bet would be to bring a laptop. That way, you can stay connected to Banner Web while you get a bagel at Starbucks in the Middle Ground, sit outside on the amphitheater steps, or have lunch in the Lair. Students at Rhodes aren’t exactly computer junkies, but you’d be pressed to find someone who doesn’t get a little edgy when the server goes down.

The computer labs aren’t bad and printing is free (although there aren’t any color printers). Still, not paying ten cents a page is pretty sweet, especially when you have a 60-page report due. I would encourage students to bring their own desktops or laptops, but use the library or Buckman to print everything out. Get your tuition’s worth in ink. |

The computer labs are great places to work on papers, computer projects, or to print term papers. They also have a Mac lab for Mac users. The music department has upgraded to digital recording software and has gotten several new pieces of technology. Students don’t necessarily need their own computer, but the convenience of it is nice for downloading music or playing games. |

I would definitely encourage new students to bring their own computers because it is just so much more convenient! So much communication happens via e-mail that Rhodes students have to check it multiple times during the day. Also, for social reasons, all my Rhodes friends are constantly on AIM, so it makes it much easier to track people down and see what they are up to because of away messages. It saves a lot of walking time since there are so many things available through the Rhodes Web site like the ITS page, the library catalog, and the menu for the Rat. As far as the campus electronic facilities, they are useful. They keep decent hours, and they provide a nice, quiet study environment. |

Computer labs are always available, and you can print for free! As a commuter, I wondered whether I should bring a laptop to school everyday. I quickly discovered that I have computer access almost everywhere on campus, so there was no need. |
