Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you focus solely on statistics, Rhodes won't seem like the most diverse place. The majority of students is upper-middle-class, white Christians. This is a frequent complaint of many students and faculty members, though some would challenge the numbers and say that the campus is diverse if you become more aware of those around you. While racial diversity is slightly lacking, Rhodes draws in kids from all over the country with different experiences, family backgrounds, and political beliefs. Most students are Christian, but there's a strong Jewish and Muslim community, and few judge based on personal beliefs. In fact, most students really want to interact with people from backgrounds different than their own, and there are few, if any, issues of discrimination or racism.

Rhodes students are also passionate and opinionated, and there's a wide range of different opinions and interests represented. Many even seek out opportunities to open-mindedly debate and discuss their ideas. Eventually, you might come across someone who's stuck in his or her own ways, but for the most part, the Rhodes community really embraces diversity. The number of minority students has greatly increased in recent years, and it is continuing to climb annually. The hope is that once minority groups have a stronger presence on campus, more students will be willing to join as the years go on. It will be a process to make a major change from the current semi-homogenous community, but it is a process that most Rhodes students are willing to carry out.

Diversity

The diversity at Rhodes College is just about what you would accept it to be. Sure, there are a number of different ethnicities on campus, but for the most part, it's upper class white kids. Nothing against the college, but the cost alone scares a lot of people away. However, being a lower middle class white student, I was actually attracted to the school because of the fact that for a one of the best southern, private liberal arts colleges, Rhodes wasn't made up entirely of rich kids and that appealed to me very much.

Accepting Campus

Rhodes might not be the most racially diverse campus, but the student body is accepting of all walks of life. For being in the South, there is a broad spectrum of political and religious views and the campus is very open to wherever you stand on those issues. There aren't many extremes on either end. The campus is pretty open to the GLBT community and open-minded in its thinking. There are many international students, as well. The one downside is is sometimes the minority racial groups seem to be separated from the majority of campus, but this is only true in some cases.

At Least They Try and Everyone Really Is Welcome

Diversity is an obsessive topic here. There are a lot of white kids, but a good mix overall. No one really cares about your ethnicity or religion. LGBT population is really small, but they are very accepted.

How would you best describe the political beliefs of campus as a whole?

Facts

Gay Pride

There aren't many openly gay students on campus, but those who are find that the student body becomes more accepting of them each year. It is a struggle for some, but most do not use sexual orientation as a judge of character, and there are hardly ever any incidents of public harassment or discrimination. The GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) organizes events every year, and they strive to promote acceptance and understanding.

Political Activity

Some Rhodes students maintain an apathetic stance on politics, but a surprising amount is actually very political. Some students will jump at a chance to discuss their beliefs. The campus as a whole seems to remain moderate, and there's a good balance between conservatives and liberals. This creates a fairly open environment in general, but there are instances where people become a little too passionate about their beliefs.

Economic Status

Rhodes is a liberal arts school, so the majority of students is in the upper-middle class. Looking around, you'll see a lot of name-brand clothing and designer labels, and some pretty nice cars appear in the parking lot. There are still plenty of students who come from a more comfortable/modest background, and no one judges based on economic status.

Most Common Religions

Rhodes is affiliated with the Presbyterian church, and thus it's predominantly Christian. The Rhodes Christian Fellowship (RCF), the Reformed University Fellowship (RUF), and the Catholic Student Association (CSA) are active organizations on campus, and they sponsor many events. Jewish and Muslim organizations are active, too, but they are smaller in comparison.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Rhodes minority clubs make their presence heard. The Black Student Association (BSA) hosts great events and parties that are open to everyone, as does the Rhodes Indian Cultural Exchange (RICE) and All Students Interested in Asia (ASIA). The entire campus is invited and encouraged to attend all the events these clubs sponsor.

Did You Know? More than 80 percent of Rhodes students are involved in community service in all different areas of the city. Of these, many students spend time with multilingual organizations and diversity awareness groups, such as Bridges and Common Ground.
