College Prowler Take

Greek life at Rhodes is unlike anything you would normally find when investigating fraternity and sorority involvement on other college campuses. While over 50 percent of the college is part of the Greek system, there is no division within the student body in terms of who is and who isn’t in a frat or sorority. Everyone hangs out with each other, no matter their affiliation or non-affiliation. This is probably due mostly to the fact that Greeks aren’t allowed to live in their houses, so there’s no sense of them being separated from the rest of the campus. Fraternity and sorority members definitely show pride in their chosen organizations, but there’s no rivalry between members of different Greek affiliations, and independents don’t get the cold shoulder either. Greek events, philanthropic activities, and parties at Rhodes are usually open to the entire student body. Because of this, there’s no pressure to go Greek, as you won’t really miss out on anything if you don’t. The Greeks host most of the on-campus parties and play a large role in the social scene, but with the open invites, no one gets left out. Many people choose to join fraternities and sororities, but almost just as many choose to stay independent while still participating in events hosted by the Greek organizations.

Greek life is pretty prominent, but not dominating by any means. Since the Greeks don’t live in houses, no one is amazingly cliquish. I room with a member of my own sorority and a member of another one. We all get along wonderfully and hang out outside of the dorm all the time.

I’m Greek, so I’m partial. At Rhodes, Greek Life is good. It’s a strong, but not overbearing, force with good intentions. I hope we (Greeks) are as open as I think we are—to other Greeks and non-Greeks alike. Yes, we dominate the social scene, but I think more in the sense of providing much of what happens socially for students on campus and concerning leadership; most of your strong campus leaders are Greek. There is, in fact, a correlation between Greeks and student involvement on campus. The same people are always involved and many (if not most) are Greek.

Not Overpowering

A+

Half the student body is active in Greek Life but I promise its not annoying. All of the parties at the frat houses are open and you see everyone at them. the only closed parties are formals. but the greek life is a great resource for all students to find things to do on the weekends.

Rhodes Greek organizations are little more than large clubs. As a Greek myself, I have found it quite rewarding, and I know there will often be something to do on the weekends if I can’t find anything else. But, at the same time, it’s not my life. Greek organizations are very important on campus, providing social, philanthropic, and leadership opportunities to their members, but aren’t at all like big schools where the members of one fraternity or sorority can’t or don’t talk to someone of a different fraternity or sorority. And the lodges are strictly meeting places (or party places for the fraternities); no one lives there.

Each year, Rhodes students gather to watch and participate in the Kappa Delta All-Sing, a musical competition that has become a Rhodes tradition.

It’s not always “All Greek” to Rhodes students. Many of the events hosted by the Greek organizations on campus are open to all students, including parties, service activities, and pageants.
