No one would go so far as to say that every guy and every girl on campus is swoon worthy, but in general, the student body at Rhodes is well over moderately attractive. As for the guys, you’ll see many excellent physiques, a fair amount of tousled hair, and the occasional dimple here and there. You’ll also see some artsy, intellectual types, a few who want nothing better than to be transported back to the ‘60s, and a number who are clean-cut and sport capped teeth. The girls are similarly assorted according to their own styles, personalities, and genetic blessings. Nearly everyone is outspoken and intelligent, which are also attractive qualities, and generally people are sincere and maintain a commendable level of integrity. All this loveliness, however, is occasionally laced with arrogance. Another problem that persists is the dearth of available men. Guys definitely have the upper hand here, as they are in the minority and have the pick of the attractive girls.

While Rhodes is an attractive campus, students don’t come here for the eye candy. It’s just an unexpected (but very welcome) bonus for most people. The lopsided girl-to-guy ratio would lead you to believe that a goodly amount of girls are single, but that’s not true. Many of the girls (and some guys for that matter) choose to date people from Memphis rather than limit themselves to those within the Rhodes bubble.

The boys are all commitment-phobic babies. The ones that do date end up engaged by senior year. It is really quite strange. There is no casual dating here, just drunken hookups or serious ‘we are planning on getting married’ relationships. It is also surprising how many bright, intelligent girls are here only to find a husband and get their ‘Mrs.’ degree.

It’s weird. You really don’t expect guys at college to be smart, hot, and nice, but they are! The guys here are total gentlemen. They even open doors!

Rhodes is a beautiful campus full of beautiful people. Though there are the exceptions, most are fairly intelligent and actually care about issues ranging from politics to social problems, movies to sports, and medicine to acting. As far as romantic relationships are concerned, Rhodes grads are great. But you have to wait until they graduate because students (especially the guys) use this time to grow up. This, of course, is a generalization, and several people do find their great loves here.

The girls are not nearly as hot as those at Ole Miss and the University of Georgia. However, you’ll notice that these girls have more to them than just good looks—Rhodes girls are smart and personable, as well as attractive.

I’m really not quite sure where Rhodes finds all these attractive people. There are tons of well-dressed, smart, cute guys and girls. Kids are really friendly here, especially to new people. Being a freshman girl was crazy! I’ve never gotten so much attention from guys in my life.

Facts

Birth Control Available?

No - Female students can make appointments for pelvic exams and birth control prescriptions, but Health Services does not issue the contraceptives. Students must go to a community pharmacy and have the prescription filled, and they are responsible for the payment of their prescription.

Social Scene

Initiating social interaction on campus is one of the easiest and best-loved pastimes of Rhodes students. The student body is extremely outgoing and friendly. Though most students are academically-minded and focused on their studies, there is no lack of social butterflies. Mingling with students outside of your major, Greek affiliation, social background, or academic interests is a very common occurrence on campus and is openly sought after for the most part. Striking up a conversation with someone you see in the mailroom or pass on the way to class isn't unusual or awkward.

Hookups or Relationships?

A good amount of students on campus are in relationships, though not always with other Rhodes students. The dating scene is mostly found off campus, as the majority of Rhodes students who are together are either in serious relationships or just hooking-up at parties.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Rhodes students are committed to their studies, their social lives, and their extracurriculars. Study groups, intramurals, clubs, the Greek organization, and parties on and off campus are all equally good places to find someone you may hit it off with. Venturing out into Memphis (whether it be going to a club or Sunday morning bible class) is also a great way to meet non-Rhodes students and expand your dating pool.

Dress Code

Practically anything goes here: jeans and a T-shirt, wearing your PJs to class, '70s ponchos, Salvation Army skirts, Louis Vuitton handbags, and designer ensembles—you name it. Rhodes students sport a variety of styles, and your look usually doesn't determine the people you hang out with. If you dress eclectic, snazzy, or just bum and go for the unkempt look, it's all the same here
