Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

One of the greatest things about Rhodes is that you can find a guy or girl who is both attractive and smart. The entire student body isn't drop-dead gorgeous, but there are tons of cute people walking around. That becomes most apparent during the spring when the warm Southern weather brings everyone outside. Girls complain that it takes a little too long for the guys to mature, and guys complain that the girls are a little too snobby, but that's the case at almost any college. As students get older, the "party" mentality of freshman and sophomore years starts to wear off, and it is easier to find someone you have a true connection with. All styles and looks are represented, from preppy to artsy to near-crazy, and in the end, there will be someone for everyone. You can make some of the greatest friends, especially if you keep an open mind.

Aside from being nice to look at, Rhodes students are typically genuine, intelligent, good-hearted people. While arrogance sometimes shows itself, the good in the student body tends to outweigh the bad. There's also an unbalanced girl-to-guy ratio, giving girls fewer guys to choose from. Those who are tired of their Rhodes dating options often decide—with success—to explore the Memphis community and the other colleges in the area.

Girls and Guys

Here at Rhodes College you can find someone from each social group imaginable. There is a good bit of diversity on the Rhodes campus, which is something that I really like. You can find people that are just like you while you can also meet people who you might have never considered being friends with in high school.

Someone for Everyone

As far as I can tell, there is someone for everyone at Rhodes. If you're into preppy guys or sporty guys we have them but we also have hipsters, nerds, intellectuals, and really anything you can think of. The boys tend to be pretty good looking and so do the girls. Campus dress tends to be casual and preppy but not everyone dresses that way by any means.

Most of the kids here are pretty preppy and some can be real snobs. I suppose you'll have jerks, sluts, and snobs anywhere, though. There are definitely some gems here, though. I found my own little group and they're the best friends I could have asked for.

Facts

Social Scene

Rhodes makes it so easy to start up a conversation with someone new. Chances are, you'll be able to at least recognize a good portion of the student body after only a semester, and if you don't know someone, one of your friends will. Everyone mixes—regardless of major, Greek affiliation, and social background. Partially thanks to traditional Southern hospitality, it's typical to see students holding doors open for one another and smiling at those they pass on their way to class. Still, since Rhodes is so small, many nickname the place "Rhodes High School" because of the quickly-formed and seemingly clique-ish groups that are created. But almost all students are friendly and willing to interact with others outside of their circles; it's just a matter of taking the initiative and pursuing a change, something that happens more after freshman year.

Hookups or Relationships?

Rhodes has a good mix of hookups and relationships. It is such a small campus that those who are looking for casual hookups have to deal with most of the school hearing about it, but many get over that and continue on with it. If you prefer relationships, don't worry because they aren't uncommon, either. It's kind of surprising how many students start dating freshman year and stay together throughout their time at Rhodes, and it's easy to pick out the couples in serious relationships. Needless to say, you can basically do whichever one you want. There's even the option to explore the dating scene at the universities surrounding Rhodes, which many students do.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Rhodes students are committed to their studies, their social lives, and their extracurriculars. Study groups, intramurals, clubs, the Greek organization, and parties on and off campus are all equally good places to find someone you may hit it off with. Venturing out into Memphis (whether it be going to a club or Sunday morning bible class) is also a great way to meet non-Rhodes students and expand your dating pool.

Dress Code

Rhodes does lean a little toward the preppy side, but the student body in general has a wide range of styles. What you wear doesn't have much of an impact on who you're friends with. Some students like dressing up for classes, others prefer the sweatpants and T-shirt look, and both are perfectly OK. The nicer clothes get brought out for weekend nights and tailgating, but by Sunday afternoon, it's most likely back to the Nike shorts. Wearing something too out of the norm might get you a few weird looks, but there's no pressure to constantly look perfectly presentable and decked out in the latest fashions—unless, of course, that's how you want to dress!
