You’d think a school in the middle of Memphis—a city famous for not only its barbecue but also its insanely high crime rate—would have serious safety issues. That’s not the case with Rhodes, though. The gates that enclose the campus form somewhat of a “Rhodes Bubble,” but, more importantly, they’re there to protect students from any unwanted outside visitors. Each entrance is either guarded by Campus Safety or a special access entry gate that only students and faculty can unlock. Furthermore, while you're walking around campus, it takes five minutes to find a Campus Safety officer rolling up in a golf cart or an instantly recognizable silver SUV. Campus Safety cannot be thanked enough for all they do for the students. Not only do they perform an amazing job of protecting the campus, but they’re also incredibly caring, friendly, and helpful during any type of problem, big or small. Because of that, students rarely feel unsafe within the gates.

That being said, Rhodes is still a college campus in a bustling city. Yes, it’s still a bad idea to go home with a random person you meet at a club on Beale Street or attempt to walk to Taco Bell at 2 a.m. (or any time, really). Some areas outside campus are very questionable, and if you have a car, you should consider getting a GPS because you don’t want to get lost in an unfamiliar area. Thanks to the honor code and general quality of Rhodes students, on-campus crime is much rarer (though it does exist). The honor code and hard work of Campus Safety make it easy to forget that you’re in the middle of one of the most dangerous cities in America, and even though you might not have to worry too much about leaving your laptop in the library or keeping your dorm room door unlocked while on campus, the same cannot be said once you exit the gates.

The Rhodes Bubble

This place is like a fortress, and I mean that in the best way possible. The campus is intimate, beautiful, and enclosed on all sides by a fence, FOB activated gates, and drives protected by campus safety. Plus because of the Honor Code, one can be confident in trusting their fellow students not to steal.

Rhodes College Campus Safety

Rhodes has a very low crime rate but they always respond immediately when called upon. They make all people, whether students or visitors, feel welcomed and safe at all times on campus and will do any and everything they can to keep it that way. When you want to go to a certain part of campus but don't want to walk because it's late, you can just call campus safety and they'll give you a ride to wherever it is you need or want to go. I feel extremely safe on campus. I have no fear of walking by myself at night on campus because one thing it's already hard to get on campus and the day time and even more difficult to get on campus at night.

The Rhodes Bubble

Contrary to most of Memphis, I feel completely safe at Rhodes. Campus safety is always around, and I often times walk across campus alone at 4:00 in the morning. I've never felt unsafe. However, use common sense. Lock your doors, and don't leave your wallet unattended.
