Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you come to Rhodes, prepare for some raised eyebrows when you start telling people that you're moving to Memphis. The city doesn't always have the best rep. That being said, by the end of their four years there, most students come to love the city and don't want to leave. Memphis just has some unspoken charm that people cannot seem to escape. Locals are welcoming toward college students in the area, including those from Rhodes, University of Memphis, and Christian Brothers University (all around 10 minutes from each other). There is always something going on in the city, including Grizzlies games, concerts, barbecue competitions, Broadway productions, and restaurant openings. You can tour the Gibson guitar factory or Sun Studio, walk across the street to the nationally-ranked zoo, visit the Peabody ducks, or have a picnic at Mud Island. The Memphis music scene, though not as strong as in Nashville, is great, and there's always live music to be heard when you walk down Beale Street. Plus, people come from all over for the annual Beale Street Music Festival in early May. There are also so many restaurants to be discovered by exploring the city—something Rhodes students love to do.

Memphis is not the safest place in the world, so students usually don't go out without a friend. Before going to a new place, it's advised to check the directions ahead of time to avoid making a wrong turn or going into a bad neighborhood (GPS doesn't know the difference!). Common sense is necessary, but most students don't encounter a dangerous experience, even with the city's high crime rate. Just give Memphis a chance, and chances are you won't regret it. It might take some time, but the city has an almost magical way of growing on people.

Kinda Boring, but OK If You Try Hard

The campus is walled off from the rest of Memphis, and there's a great discrepancy in financial well-being and social class between Rhodes College and the rest of Memphis. Memphis is having a tough time in this economy, so it didn't fit the "big city" shell I had in mind. A lot of areas seem really rundown. Midtown area is alright. The Stax Museum is the coolest place in Memphis in my opinion. It's really interesting and shows the wonderful history of Memphis and music. You need to have a car or friends with cars in order to even experience life outside campus. Students seem to be very dramatic when it comes to their safety outside campus, and they say it's very "sketchy." However it is not at all compared to most big cities. Beale Street is very touristy, and you can only really enjoy it if you are 21+.

Memphis

Memphis is a really cool city. There are lots of concert and sporting events downtown. There are tons of neat restaurants and shopping areas. Beale Street Music Festival is in May, which is a very popular event for many Rhodes kids. Memphis is normally thought of as a dangerous city but I have never felt threatened in any way nor have I had an issue with anyone in Memphis outside of Rhodes campus.

Memphis Is SO FUN

Memphis is a great city. There is a ton to see and do day or night. Memphis in May brings a lot of great big name musical artists but there's also a lot of cool local bands, places to see performances, and a decent underground music scene. The food cannot be beat. I have yet to eat anywhere in Memphis and thought, "Ahh, I probably wouldn't eat there again." Shopping can be a bit of a challenge since big malls are twenty minutes away but there are a lot of good basic stores around Rhdoes (i.e. Dillards, Payless, Target, Macys, Charlotte Russe, American Eagle, Journey's, Old Navy, etc.). Memphis has great museums and historical sites as well as fun places to go visit. Local people don't seem to mind college students and will often strike up a conversation about school with you and say positive things.
