Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Whether they're technically legal to drink or not, Rhodes students always find ways to have fun. Greek life dominates the on-campus night scene on weekends. At least one fraternity hosts a party each night, and these are open to the entire campus. The parties aren't crazy, but they can still be a lot of fun, particularly while they're still new during your freshman and sophomore years. Plus, you don't have to worry about a DD (designated driver), and often the fraternities make a few pledges DD for students if the party moves to a house off campus. Rhodes Activities Board (RAB) also hosts bus parties at local clubs that are usually a blast, so that’s another thing to look forward to.

As students get older, many like to venture out into Memphis to explore the local bar/club scene. Beale Street is perfect if you're over 21, but if you want to avoid getting kicked out, you'll have to get there at around 8:50 p.m.—they start checking IDs at around 9 or 10, and using a fake is risky. Dance clubs like Senses, Atlas, and 152 can be a lot of fun if you go with a group of friends, and all you have to do is ask around to figure out which bars and clubs will "overlook" your birth year. Some places can get a little sketchy, particularly late at night, but talk to upperclassmen and it won't be long before you figure out where or where not to go. Students who want louder, bigger parties check out the night scenes at local universities like University of Memphis and Christian Brothers. And if drinking isn't your thing, Memphis is full of great live music venues and restaurants. Regardless of your age or party style, you'll never have a shortage of things to do at night, when you're ready to take a break from schoolwork.

Rhodes Nightlife

very fratty, transportation is not offered by the school so you're on your own getting to and from downtown. Lotta house parties and on campus parties but they get kind of redundant and boring after freshman year. Alex's has awesome tenders it's a good place for the drunchies/ Zinnies is a definite Rhodes hang out but it's a fratty fratty crowd. There's a party on campus every weekend so you won't miss much if you don't want to go to a bar. Dublin house is new and an awesome bar. Not specifically a rhodes hang out but you're guaranteed to see a few "rhodents" without being overwhelmed.

Be Friendly and You'll Be Liked.

While most of the fun I've had has been on campus, Memphis does have a lot to offer (especially for those who have turned 21). I would recommend hitting up a few fraternity parties as well as campus-sponsored events. Bus parties tend to be a good time, and you don't have to worry about a DD!

Nightlife Is Fun

Most of the parties are on campus or really close to campus so they're convenient. I don't drink and I like that I don't feel pressured to, though alcohol is definitely available all the time. I've gone to some parties with kids at other schools and still had fun. Overall, Memphis is a great place to be and you can always find something to do on the weekends.

Rate the off-campus bar and club scene on the following topics

What is the party scene like on campus?

What’s the best way to get to the popular nightlife spots?

Facts

Club Crawler

Memphis nightclubs are fairly good, and most close at 2 a.m. or later. The following clubs are some of the best in the city and have great music and good dance scenes. Usually the clubs are filled with college students, local Memphians, and 20-somethings.

Closing Time

Organization Parties

Sometimes clubs and organizations on campus rent out ballrooms or other spaces, and throw private parties for Rhodes students or members of their organizations. These parties usually bring out a big crowd and are generally a lot of fun. They are well advertised around campus, whether by word of mouth, posters, or emails.

Did You Know? Despite the inability to (legally) purchase alcohol, students under 21 are at no disadvantage when it comes to interesting nightlife options. There are plenty of fun places with music and dancing, or quieter coffee shops with open mic nights and such, if that is more of your scene.
