College Prowler Take

If may be worth moving to Memphis just for the restaurants. The city offers something that can satisfy practically everyone’s palette, no matter how picky or strange. Memphis not only has all the regulars covered—Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Italian, and good ol’ American, but it also offers a wide variety of not-so-common tasty choices such as Ethiopian, Russian, and “fusion” restaurants, which combine several different international cooking styles and flavors together. Memphis is a haven of great food. And with great food in Memphis comes great entertainment. There’s always blues with your BBQ, zydeco with your gumbo, and even Bach with your cordon bleu. Eating out is a night on the town in itself and well worth leaving the campus (and the Rat) behind.

Half the fun of dining out in Memphis is trying new places. Sampling a different restaurant every other weekend or so is a good way to open yourself up to what Memphis has to offer, and as a bonus, it’ll teach you how to navigate the city. As for downsides, it’s granted that you’ll find something you don’t like now and then, but that’s expected of trying anything new. Also, Memphis is mysteriously free of German restaurants, except one that’s kind of bad. So, if you’re looking for some good knodel or lebkuchen, be prepared to write to your German grandmother and beg her to express mail you some.

So Many Great Choices

A+

Memphis has so many delicious and interesting restaurants to discover. Some must haves are Central BBQ, Young Avenue Deli, Memphis Pizza Cafe and many many others. If you explore the city you are sure to find a ton of places to eat. And most are extremely affordable. While I don't recommend walking in Memphis at night, a lot of restaurants are very close to campus and you will definitely know someone with a car.

There are many good ones, and I personally have yet to visit them all. A few personal favorites are Bosco’s (weekend and evening grill and bar), the Tasty Buffet (an inexpensive yet upscale Chinese eatery), the all-essential Waffle House (for those ultra-late-night ‘I’ve got to eat or I’ll fall asleep’ study sessions), Texas de Brazil (for an upscale place affectionately called by my friends ‘the Hall of Gluttony’), Buckley’s (the best steakhouse before or after a theatrical show), and Corky’s. it’s Memphis, and what are we without a barbecue place on the list?

Man, where do I begin? I have a running list of where I must eat before I graduate. Memphis is a haven of delicious food for all tastes and budgets. My favorite is McEwen’s downtown, but On Teur and Do Sushi run a close second. For a quick bite, you can’t beat Kwik Chek or Memphis Pizza Cafe.

There are a lot of great ethnic restaurants in Memphis, and some good gourmet places as well. They are a bit hard to find and/or out of the way. In Midtown, the area around Rhodes, there are a lot of good restaurants to choose from. India Palace is an excellent Indian place. For gourmet food, Grill 83 downtown is exceptional. Zinnie’s is only a few minutes from campus and has the best bar food and burgers in town.

Did You Know?

Who doesn’t love BBQ? Memphis is famous for its barbecue, and for good reason, too. Not only is there a BBQ joint every block or so, but in May, Memphis’s Beale St. MusicFest also hosts a world championship barbeque contest each year with three full days of intense pork BBQ cooking and eating. It’s any glutton’s paradise.

Want to eat like a king? Try a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich at Elvis Presley’s Memphis restaurant.
