Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Barbecue has to be one of the first things that comes to mind whenever Memphis is mentioned, and the city definitely lives up to the hype. There are too many barbecue places to count, and they are all fantastic. But don't worry if pulled pork and ribs aren’t your thing—Memphis has something for everyone. All cultures are represented, and students have the most fun searching the city for a new favorite place. There are so many options to choose from that you cannot possibly get bored, but it won't be long until you find that one spot you'll keep going back to again and again.

Germantown is great for a nicer evening out, and Beale Street is available if you just want to grab a drink and chill with friends. The ridiculous number of frozen yogurt places in the area is convenient for study breaks, and places like YoLo even give a discount to Rhodes students. In fact, Rhodes Student Government put together a list of many places that will lower their prices upon seeing a student ID. A downside to local dining is the lack of late-night dining options, but you learn to love Taco Bell at 2 a.m. It won't be long before you find yourself looking forward to the days when you can get off campus and leave the Rat behind.

Everything Imaginable

Not only does Memphis have some of the best BBQ in the nation, but there are restaurants that can cater to your every food craving. Chicfila and Pei Wei and great, nearby fast food options. Furthermore, there are a lot of local, hole in the wall type restaurants that not only have a great ambience but a variation of delicious foods.

Eating Out

There are plently of places to go for off-campus dining, but the only way to get there is if you have transportation. You really can't walk because it is way to far. I mean you can take the bus but that is only if you know how to use it. But the eating out at the resturants, is a really good idea you have different varieties and it is cheap.

BBQ and Southern Comfort Food!

The food in Memphis is MORE than enough to make up for the average dining options on campus. Besides being BBQ city, there are great, sometimes pricier places downtown and cheaper more eclectic places in midtown, where Rhodes is located. If you are craving barbeque, the BBQ Shop is literally a 3 minute drive and is, in my opinion, the best place for a barbeque sandwich in the world. Central barbeque appreciates its Rhodes patrons and offers discounts on drinks and sandwiches if you visit often with a student ID. Main street downtown is a great place to sit on a patio and eat as people are out every night of the week downtown. Don't be afraid to venture off the beaten path, as less explored neighborhoods usually have some of the best food.

Facts

Did You Know? Memphis is famous for its barbecue, and for good reason, too. Not only is there a barbecue joint every block or so, but also in May, Memphis's Beale Street Music Festival hosts a world championship barbeque contest with three full days of intense pork cooking and eating. It's any glutton's paradise.
