Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For students who decide to make the move off campus, there are plenty of nearby areas to pick from. Craigslist is an easy way to look for a suitable place, or you can take a quick drive around various areas and look for signs and advertisements. Safety is an issue, but there are many houses within walking or biking distance of Rhodes that feel a bit more homey than areas farther into the city. If parents are concerned, some Rhodes staff members in the offices are even willing to check out an area and give an honest opinion on its security.

In many cases, living in an off-campus house or apartment is even cheaper than remaining in the dorms. The expense varies depending on the location; some houses in Mud Island and Germantown are much nicer but much more expensive than houses closer to campus. That's one reason why most students don't tend to venture out too far away from Rhodes. In general, though, it's not too difficult to find a nice and reasonably priced place to live if you decide you're ready for a place of your own. Just make sure you factor in the price of food and utilities, have someone look over your lease, and double-check the safety of the area.

Off Campus Housing

Typically just junior and seniors live off campus, if they choose to do so. Some people stay on campus all four year, but if you decide to move off campus there are tons of options. Right outside of the Rhodes gates across University there are many street filled with houses where Rhodes kids live. Living off campus is typically cheaper than the on campus housing, although you do have to pay for utilities which can become very costly. The one thing I would be most cautious of is the safety of the location of your house off campus. Other than that, I will probably move off campus as a junior or senior just for a change. But many people really love staying on campus at Rhodes.

Town Houses

The only off campus, school housing are town houses that are extremely nice. Other than that, the college is surrounded by very cute little houses that are often available for a group of students to rent at an affordable cost.
